James Haskell shocks audience with 9/11 'joke' about rugby coach
November 1, 2023EXCLUSIVE James Haskell shocks theatre audience with 9/11 ‘joke’ about rugby coach who ‘crumpled like the Twin Towers’ in first public appearance since split from wife Chloe Madeley
James Haskell shocked a theatre audience with a risqué joke about 9/11 as he made his first public appearance since splitting from wife Chloe Madeley.
Former England international James cracked the poor taste gag as he appeared at a recording of podcast World Cup After Party: The Good, the Bad and The Rugby with fellow ex international teammate Mike Tindall and Alex Payne.
It was his first public outing since he and Chloe announced their separation following five years of marriage – after he was spotted cosying up to another woman during a night out in London last month.
On Tuesday night, he and his co-hosts performed at the G-Live centre in Guildford, Surrey, to a packed house – with James mentioning several times during the two-and-a-half-hour performance, his failed relationship.
During the first half of the show the audience had laughed as he had poked fun at himself after a tyre prop fell close to Mike and rolled towards the edge of the stage he joked: ‘Where there’s blame there’s a claim… I’m going to need some cash soon, f****** drop it on me.’

While in another gag he described going out with a ‘mate who is a lawyer, well, he wasn’t a mate then but he is now’.
But it was his joke referring to the collapse of the Twin Towers – which left almost 3,000 dead in 2001 – that led to an audible sharp intake of breath from the crowd.
James – who littered his performance with four letter words – relayed a story about former England coach Andy Farrell asking players to be honest with him and staff about their methods at the team training centre.
He said:’ He went straight to Tom Wood, right, former player and he crumpled like the Twin Towers….’ then as the audience gasped and someone shouted ‘Jesus’ James said:’ What? Too obscene? Fxxx off, that was 9/11 dickhead, its 2023 time to get over it.’
As the audience uncomfortably turned in their seats, he went on:’I’m joking, joking,’ he then laughed nervously and added:’ It’s alright. Don’t worry I’m not coming back to Guildford, it’s alright.’
His co-hosts held their heads as he cracked the joke and then carried on the anecdote to the muted crowd with one overheard telling a pal:’ That was a bit near the knuckle.’
Later in another crude reference, he described how during a team building white water exercise ahead of the 2015 World Cup – for which he was left on the bench – he had reached out to try and grab ex England coach Stuart Lancaster’s life jacket.

James’ comment came after he appeared on the latest episode of their reality TV show complaining that Chloe never ‘dressed slutty’ for him
Thrusting his hand forward towards the audience, he said: ’Look at this hand ladies and gentlemen, it’s a claw fingers at all angles, only person who likes it is the missus, well used to….’
His comment came after he appeared on the latest episode of their reality TV show complaining that Chloe never ‘dressed slutty’ for him.
While getting ready, Chloe mused: ‘I know it’s a date but also it’s an active, competitive date so I’m not going to be dressing – like I ever do – like a girly girl.’
This prompted James to scoff: ‘Why are you pretending that you ever get really dressed up? You’re lying!
‘You always sit on a date and go ‘does it upset you that I don’t wear any makeup and never dress up?’ It’s more the fact you do something and you worry about it!’
Chloe said: ‘I feel bad because…’ but James jumped in to say: ‘Not bad enough to ever change it though!’ as she continued: ‘In my head we’re leaving the house and I’m comfortable and I’m warm and that’s all I care about.
‘Then we get there and other girls, like Love Island-style girls walk in and I’m like oh s**t, poor James.”
As James reasoned: ‘I never complain’, Chloe continued: ‘I dress a bit slutty, just not girly.’
James then quipped: ‘You always dress slutty when I’m not there which is even worse.’
The final episode of the reality series concluded with their daughter Bodhi’s first birthday party, which was attended by the couple’s parents.
The scenes were filmed a month before Chloe and James separated, with the couple formally announcing their split last weekend with a joint statement.
The couple, who married in 2018, had fuelled speculation about their relationship after the personal trainer emerged without her wedding ring as she partied with friends – shortly after the former rugby player was pictured chatting to a mystery blonde outside a London nightspot.
In a joint update shared to Instagram, they announced: ‘Chloe and I mutually decided to separate at the end of September, 2023.
‘We had not planned on releasing a statement at this time – certainly not while the television show was airing – but constant speculation about our marriage has, unfortunately, forced our hand.
‘Beyond this statement, we will not be speaking about this matter publicly, and we would request privacy at this time.
‘Our sole focus now is our beautiful daughter. We shall continue to co-parent with nothing but love.’
Since the split, James has been spending time with Mike and his wife Zara at the Rugby World Cup in France.
