EastEnders’ Jamie Borthwick teases ‘dark storyline’ for Jay and Walford misery
October 3, 2023After losing his on-screen wife just four months ago, EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick is diving head-first into another hard-hitting storyline. Lola’s death sparked a lot of hurt around Albert Square but none could compare to the pain that Jay Brown felt after losing his new wife.
In recent scenes, Jay has turned to Lola’s lookalike, Nadine (Jazzy Phoenix), for comfort. But their bond has taken an unexpected turn as Nadine’s offer of drugs proves too tempting for Jay.
“Jay does go to one or two dark places,” teases Jamie at the Inside Soap Awards after scooping the prize for Best Actor.
Jamie’s thrilled to be able to play out Jay’s grief on screen – especially as fans have been waiting to see how being a widower will affect him.
“After Lola’s death, it got a bit quiet for me in particular, we weren’t seeing how things were evolving,” he adds. Jay wasn’t the only Walford winner at the awards. Danielle Harold (Lola Pearce) won Best Actress and Isabella Brown (Lexi Pearce) received Best Young Performer.
EastEnders also picked up Best Storyline for Lola’s death as well as Best Soap. Max Bowden, who plays Ben Mitchell, hints that the aftermath of Lola’s death will continue to play out for months to come.
“That’s the beauty of the story,” Max says. “What’s great now is watching each character’s story unfold.
“Post-grief, people handle things differently and there’s hypocrisy that comes with that. We know that happens in real life, and that’s what the writers have done really well.”
Jay isn’t the only one struggling to cope in the wake of Lola’s passing. Ben’s eating disorder began to spiral out of control, contributing to why he didn’t want Jay moving in with him, Callum and Lexi.
In reality, Jamie and Max have loved their new partnership that comes with their characters living together.
“Maybe we’ll become a double act, like the new Ant and Dec!” jokes Max.
Luckily, Ben confided in Callum and Honey, who asked him to seek help for his bulimia. Jay’s going through his own difficulties, as Callum discovers his new drug habit.
Another big storyline that no one has stopped thinking about is the whodunnit that is set to be revealed at Christmas.
Luckily, fans of Jay can rest easy because when asked if he’s worried about being the body on the floor Jamie quickly responded “No, I’m not!”
As for what else we can expect this Christmas, Jamie says “death, and a big reveal” while Max teases “misery and trauma”. Ah, no change there then…
