Coronation Street’s Maureen Lipman’s life off screen with new man after husband’s death
September 4, 2023Dame Maureen Lipman has been a regular on our TV screens for decades, having landed her first on-screen role in 1969 and going on to star in numerous well-known shows.
The star, 77, has become a household name thanks to her incredible talents as an actress, writer and comedian, which even led to her being made a Dame in 2020.
Maureen is now arguably best known for portraying Evelyn Plummer in hit ITV soap Coronation Street – a regular role she's been in since 2018.
Here, we take a look into Maureen's life away from the cameras, including her new relationship…
Maureen was born on 10 May 1946 in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire. Her father, Zelma Pearlman, was a tailor. The star grew up Jewish and lived in Hull, where she attended Wheeler Primary School.
She first became interested in performing arts in secondary school and her mother Maurice encouraged her to pursue a career in acting. Maureen went on to train at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
She started her career in the theatre and has starred in dozens of shows, continuing to work in theatre for over fifty years.
Maureen's first television roles came in the late 60s and early 70s. She appeared in sitcoms such as The Lovers, and Doctor at Large, and The Evacuees, before being cast in comedy Agony in 1979, which helped her gain prominence in TV.
Over the years, she's appeared in numerous shows, including All at No 20, About Face, Eskimo Day, The Fugitives, The Wire and more.
She first appeared in Coronation Street in 2002 for six episodes as landlady Lillian Spencer, before then rejoining the soap in 2018 as Evelyn Plummer, the grandmother of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall).
Maureen's also appeared in several films and advertisements, and boasts an impressive writing career, having written columns for The Guardian and Good Housekeeping.
The 77 year old was made a dame in 2020 in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to charity, entertainment and the arts.
She was married to playwright Jack Rosenthal from 1974 until his death in 2004, with the pair working together on several occasions. The couple share two children, Amy and Adam, who are also both writers. Jack died from bone cancer at the age of 72 in May 2004.
In 2008, Maureen started dating computer expert Guido Castro. The pair remained together until his death in January 2021. Guido, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, passed away at the age of 84 after contracting coronavirus.
Two years after her partner's death, Maureen has now started dating again and recently revealed she is planning to attend this year's National Television Awards with her new beau, David.
Speaking about the upcoming awards bash in a new interview with the Sunday Express, Dame Maureen said: “I’m going with my gentleman friend David – it’s a baptism of fire for him. The most important thing is that I find a dress.”
She described her new beau as "very nice", adding: “It’s a gift for all concerned. It’s a gift and he’s been very nice. I’ve met some nice men in my life, some really interesting men, and we will see where it goes.”
