Bruce Willis’s wife Emma slams doctors ‘disrespectful’ comments on dementia
October 4, 2023Bruce Willis’ wife has sensationally hit back at doctors who have referred to the actor’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis as an ‘other dementia’.
Emma Heming Willis, who has been married to the Whole Nine Yards actor since 2009, has become a spokesperson on raising awareness for FTD since the family went public with the star’s diagnosis at the beginning of this year.
From September 24 to October 1 – which is World FTD Awareness Week – Emma has been speaking on her work and providing updates on Bruce’s degenerative condition.
On Monday evening, while the awareness week may have ended, Emma couldn’t resist sharing one more bit of advice – specifically to doctors who may be diagnosing those with FTD.
Speaking from her kitchen on Instagram, Emma – who has been married to Bruce since March 2009 – said: “World FTD Awareness Week has come to an end but, you know, our work does not stop there. I feel like I’m just scratching the surface.”

Crediting those who have shared their stories with her as “beautiful and inspirational”, she added she wanted to raise awareness in a bid to find a cure or treatment for the disease.
“I’m just gonna leave you with one more thing y’know because now I’m annoyed,” she then added.
“When doctors [are in the] media and they talk about dementia, they’ll say ‘Alzheimer’s and other dementia’. So FTD is the ‘other dementia’ and let me tell you something about that disease; it is real, it is out there and it will bring you to your knees,” she said.
“I think that it is an absolute disservice and absolutely disrespectful for these ‘other dementias’ to be put in that category,” Emma continued.

“I think it’s really important for us to know what these diseases are like vascular, like Lewy body, like FTD – call it what it is because that is where the confusion lies.
“When people think of dementia they automatically think of Alzheimer’s. I do not want to see this disease and our ‘other dementias’ sweeped under the rug anymore. So again – there’s why, let’s continue to raise our voice.”
Frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, affects the different area to the brain than other types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s.
As a result, his memory is not as badly affected, but his ‘executive functions’ – such as speech, language understanding and personality – have been affected, and getting gradually worse.
