I’m A Celebrity host Declan Donnelly risked the wrath of the public yet again when he made another ruthless joke about Sunderland just moments into the ITV show.
During Tuesday’s (November 28) visit to the Australian jungle, the 48-year-old welcomed viewers back for another jam-packed episode. As he introduced the show, the dad-of-two teased another gruelling Bushtucker trial involving Sam Thompson, Marvin Humes and Tony Bellew.
But the Geordie hunk couldn’t help but poke fun at their rival city just minutes into the show. He opened the show with: "Hello! Good morning or good evening. Welcome to Australia where the big story is Misery Motel is open for business."
Ant added: "And in case you didn't know, Misery Motels are actually part of the Misery Group, PLC, along with Misery Air and Misery Holidays." It was at this point that Declan poked fun at Newcastle's neighbouring town as he compared it to the gruelling Bushtucker trial.
He joked: "I actually went on a Misery Holiday years ago. It was a week in Sunderland." Immediately after he make the comment he insisted to viewers that he was “just a joke” as he pleaded for fans not to slate him online.
Fans were divided by the cheeky joke as they took to the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their thoughts online. One user penned: "Ant & Dec slagging off Sunderland will forever be funny #ImACeleb."
Another joked: "I spent about 2 hours in Sunderland years ago. I left with a bad attitude [cry-laughing emoji] #ImACeleb." A third penned: "'Week in Sunderland' amazing! Here's your Bafta lads! #ImACeleb."
However some viewers were less than impressed by the low joke, as one user fumed: "Sunderland gags wearing a bit thin now boys, need some new material #ImACeleb #antanddec."
Another agreed: "Ant and Dec keep making jokes about how s**te Sunderland is [two crying emojis] #ImACeleb." A third agreed: "Cannot be doing with the Sunderland slander, some of us live here. Please Dec [crying emoji] #ImACeleb."
His comment comes days after the reality show was flooded with Ofcom complaints about their last cheeky joke at Sunderland's expense during the launch show.
Ant opened the show saying: “For the first time in I’m A Celebrity history, we’ve dropped our first three celebrities in the middle of the Australian outback. In case you’re not familiar, it is a barren, hostile environment barely fit for human habitation.”
It was at this point that Dec chimed in with: “Imagine Sunderland, but hotter!” as the duo chuckled to each other on air. After the show, 24 viewers complained to Ofcom about the slanderous joke, with many more rushing to the social media platform X – formerly known as Twitter – to share their frustration online.
