Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas split happened ‘very suddenly’ after row on his birthday
September 22, 2023The tumultuous divorce battle between Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas has taken a turn since the Game of Thrones actress is now suing her ex in an attempt to get their daughters back with her in the UK.
The actress, 27, filed a complaint against her estranged husband in New York court on Thursday requesting that their daughters be allowed to return to England with her, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
Sophie has alleged that Joe, 34, has "wrongfully retained" the children and refuses to hand over their passports. Jonas disputes the claim.
She also claimed that their marriage of four years deteriorated "very suddenly" after an argument on Aug 15, which happens to be Joe's 34th birthday.
The Jonas Brothers member filed for divorce in Miami weeks after the alleged argument while Sophie was in the UK but she says in the new complaint that she first heard about the official divorce "from the media."
According to Sophie's complaint, the estranged couple previously agreed over Christmas 2022 that England would be the girls' "forever home," but Joe is now neglecting to fulfil on the promise to let his children live there.
A representative for Joe challenged Sophie's timeline of events in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, and claimed that the Florida court administering their divorce has entered an order which currently restricts both parents from relocating the children.
The statement said: "Joe is seeking shared parenting with the kids so that they are raised by both their mother and father, and is of course also okay with the kids being raised both in the U.S. and the UK.
"The children were born in the U.S. and have spent the vast majority of their lives in the U.S. They are American citizens."
The statement stressed that Jonas and Turner's children "were not abducted" and added: "After being in Joe's care for the past three months at the agreement of both parties, the children are currently with their mother.
"Sophie is making this claim only to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and to remove the children from the U.S. permanently."
The couple share three year old Willa and their one year old, whose name the couple haven’t confirmed, but she is listed as "D.J." in the court documents.
They made the move from the US to the UK in April 2023 where the documents note Sophie began a new filming project and Joe began his tour with the Jonas Brothers.
The couple supposedly agreed to have their two children travel with Joe as he had more free time around his work commitments compared to Sophie.
