Royal biographer Gyles, 75, appeared on BBC Breakfast on Friday (September 8) to pay tribute to the late Queen.
He told hosts Charlie Stayt and Sarah Campbell: "It's extraordinary how the year has past so quickly.
"Of course, she was part of our lives for all our lives, the longest reining monarch in our history, 70 years of sovereign, so vivid too.
"It was only a year ago we were watching that wonderful skit with her and Paddington Bear and it was so charming and so enchanting.
"I've spent the year writing a book about her, thinking about her and meeting people who knew her.
"She was driven by duty, sustained by faith and kept happy by her commitment to her dogs and horses."
Gyles went on to reveal he's "not surprised" that King Charles II is following his mum's tradition by remembering her on Accession Day.
He said: "I'm not surprised the King is today is following her tradition, always on the anniversary of her Accession she remembered her father because she knew she only became Queen when she was just 25 because of her father's early death.

"What has been interesting about the year that has followed is that King Charles and indeed Queen Camila, because they are older people and authentic, somehow I think people have accepted that.
"I think King Charles' first 12 months have gone remarkably well."
