Star Trek Picard: Patrick Stewart stars in new spin off series

Sir Patrick Stewart has revealed he was “disappointed” with the quality of his acting when he appeared in the first series of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, the legendary icon shared how he prepared for the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his thoughts about his acting.

“I watched two whole seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and I was very disappointed in the quality and nature of my work in the first series,” he admitted.

“It was not real enough. It was very authoritarian and very commanding but was way too stentorian.

“It was my stage background, and it didn’t work.”

The 83-year old had built up a reputation in British theatre after 14 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In 1986, he was offered a six-year deal to star in a new sci-fi series called Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The actor ended up playing the role of Picard for seven seasons and also made four Star Trek movies.

He recently returned to the role for three seasons in the 2020 series of Star Trek: Picard.

The theatre legend added: “In the second series I was much better because I had been working with very good American actors.

“I watched what they did and played it with the same openness and freedom.”

He was knighted at Buckingham Palace in 2010 for his services to acting.

According to The Times, he almost turned down the role of Captain Picard due to its six-year commitment.

The series became an instant hit and the finale was watched by more than 30 million Americans.

Stewart will also be alongside Ralph Fiennes, Bella Ramsey, Joan Collins and Zak Abel.

The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One on Fridays at 22:40.
