Outlander star Caitríona Balfe has opened up about shooting on the Starz series and some of the challenges which come with making such a sweeping drama spanning different time periods.
Speaking during The Women of Outlander panel at the ATX TV Festival back in June, the Irish star, 43, and fellow executive producer Maril Davis weighed in on the pitfalls of working with animals on the program.
Davis explained: “We’ve had to change our Rollos. I love dogs and cats, so I don’t know if I could pick one.”
Adding: “You know what, we’re all dog and cat and animal lovers but no one loves an animal on the show.”
Balfe, who is best known as Claire Fraser, said: “I mean it just causes chaos and I don’t care how many times people say, ‘No, but they’re trained.’

“I’m like, ‘No, they don’t care that we’re making a show, they’re like, ‘Screw you. I don’t care.’”
Despite getting treats, the animal performers would often not play ball leading to hundreds of takes ending up on the cutting room floor.
The Belfast and Ford v Ferrari star went on to address her feline co-star’s on-set behavior: “Adso just kind of hangs out and he’s cat, he doesn’t give a s*** either but he does really like… he gives a s*** in a very sedentary way.”
Balfe and Davis aren’t the first to open up about the difficulties of shooting with animals on Outlander with showrunner Matthew B. Roberts admitting the real reason the White Sow was cut out of the series.

Along with discussing working with animals, the duo also spoke about their relationship, admitting they would sometimes go “toe-to-toe” on certain issues.
However, there was much mutual respect and admiration between the pair and their “passion” for Outlander would sometimes lead to heated discussions.
Davis said: “There have been times we’ve disagreed and gotten very angry at each other but I think, as Caitríona says, we have the basis of we’ll work through it to the point of where I respect her as a person and her talent and her thought process and creativity. I hope she does for me as well.
“I think we can have those arguments, maybe be angry at each other but then come back and be like, ‘Okay we love each other enough that we’re going to move past it.’
“Once again, we are both very passionate and sometimes that comes out in different ways.”
Balfe agreed: “I think a lot of times when it happens on set, where we have a disagreement, it’s sort of like we fight our corner […] and then usually we get to a point where we do one of each, which is always a good compromise.”
She said within the creative process it was “all subjective” and so there would be multiple takes or interpretations on the same thing.
Outlander seasons 1-7 are available to stream on Starz in the USA and on Lionsgate+ in the UK
