He admitted that after losing Joanne, who he'd been married to since 1992, he "didn't really want to meet anyone".
"You don't expect it to be you and you don't expect it to be your wife," said the 58-year-old.
"But I'm going on the show to get some confidence. I must have subconsciously wanted to meet someone by saying yes to the show."
Roger's children hatched the plan together because they wanted to let him know they were fine about him dipping his toe into the dating pool after losing their mum.
Daughter Jess said Roger always puts them first and that it was their way of telling him: "Stop worrying about us."

My Mum, Your Dad was announced earlier this year after months of rumours about a Love Island for "oldies" being in the pipeline.
It was initially going to be called The Romance Retreat but later became My Mum, Your Dad.
Davina made it clear she was into the idea and weeks after the ITV show was announced, she confirmed that she would be hosting.
“Omg… I manifested and it came true!!” the star wrote on Instagram.
She told fans at the time that the programme was for "single parents who have lived a life, have stories to tell about their dating pasts and deserve another chance at love".
My Mum, Your Dad starts on ITV on Monday 11 September.
