Coronation Street’s Carla Connor star on ‘massive turning point’ in relationship
December 14, 2023Coronation Street: The Barlow’s interrogate Peter
It’s no secret that there’s been trouble in paradise for Coronation Street couple Carla Connor (played by Alison King) and Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne). It comes after Peter ran down serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce).
Since then, fans of the ITV soap have watched Peter spiral while Carla tries to salvage her business. Despite the duo having a turbulent relationship in the past, it’s clear this time something is different.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media publications, actress Alison King touched on what changed in their relationship. When asked whether or not Stephen’s death was a turning point for them, she heavily agreed.
She said: “Yes it was a massive, massive turning point because although he acted on a whim, I think she doubted his motive and why he didn’t stop the car and what he actually did in that moment.
“I don’t think they talked about it properly or enough. They weren’t truthful enough with each other. Actually, he believed he did save Jenny’s life, but then there was everything the witnesses said.

“Carla knew how angry he was with Stephen and when he sensed that she maybe was slightly doubting him that hit him hard. He didn’t think she was truly on his side.”
As Carla’s main focus is rebuilding the Underworld factory and undoing the damage caused by Stephen, she starts to realise Peter’s life could be better away from Weatherfield.
The soap star revealed the thought of her partner moving off the cobbles first happens when Peter gets postcards from a friend on a boat, asking him to go and join him.
When Peter asks Carla if she’d go with him, she flat out says no, making it clear they have two very different visions of their future.

With his exit imminent, the soap star touched on filming those last scenes with Chris, who has been part of the soap for over 20 years.
She said: “We’re filming solidly together for two days. There was a lot to learn. But aside from that it was amazing, but it was so emotional.
“I did not need any tear stick for those scenes. There was no way of knowing what would happen.
“Every time we did it I literally filled up with emotion and started crying at different times in every scene.
“Just seeing a different look from Chris would set me off because he’s so wonderful at Meisner technique which involves an actor reacting to another actor’s performance and behaviour, he’s so reactive.
“That’s why I’ve loved working with him so much, it’s always about the reaction. “
It was revealed earlier this year that the soap star was leaving, although the long-running character’s departure isn’t permanent.
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
