Zoe Ball says Madonna kept her waiting 3 hours before most ‘awkward’ interview
November 14, 2023Zoe Ball speaks about Madonna being her trickiest interview
BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball said interviewing Madonna, 65, has been her most “awkward” chat with a celebrity to date.
Speaking on her show this week, the 52-year-old told listeners that, in hindsight, she probably should have just gone to the pub after being made to to wait for the singer for three hours.
Zoe recalled being in a glitzy London hotel with her fellow DJ Kevin Greening at the time, as they excitedly waited and prepared for their meeting with her, which didn’t go down so well.
She spilled: “She didn’t really want to be there.
“I think it was possibly the most awkward interview I’ve ever done in my life and actually the only one that I think I should have just got up and gone, ‘Ah, don’t worry about it, love. I’ll go down the pub’.”

The presenter gave more of an insight into her interview with the pop icon on her show last month.
According to the host, Madonna didn’t give much in her answers through the majoity of their chat, until the very end when it was too late.
Speaking to Tina Daheley, she said: “Oh, Madonna… trickiest interview I’ve ever had to do in my life, back in the 1990s.
“She’d be like, ‘No, no, no, no, no,’ to all the answers and then the last question she gave me something.”
Shortly after however Zoe said Madonna’s team ended the chat, which left her with very little content.

Despite their awkward encounter, the presenter said she was still a big fan of Madonna who she called “an amazing performer”.
In 2021, Zoe said one of her biggest career highlights to date was interviewing Robert De Niro and Al Pacino together.
Spilling details of their chat, she said: “Even when they greeted each other it was like so many scenes from every film they’ve ever made suddenly happening in front of you.”
Despite the interview going well however, Zoe recalled experiencing her first ever hot flush due to the menopause midway through their chat.
She recalled suddenly feeling “great heat” which made her go red and caused her glasses to steam up.
“I could see Al Pacino looking at me sort of willing me to get to the end of the question, which had no point to it by now, since I was on fire,” she recalled.
It wasn’t until the following the year that Zoe realised it was a menopause symptom.
“Menopause took me a while to get a handle on, but I seem to be getting there,” she added to The Guardian.
“It’s a strange thing, I look at my daughter and think she’s about to start that journey and I’m about to end it.”
