SHOPPERS are going wild for vegetables at "silly prices" at major supermarkets.

Asda, Tesco and Aldi are among the shops slashing prices just in time for Christmas dinner.

Prices start from just 15p easing pressure on hard-up household budgets at what's often the most expensive time of year.

Festive essentials like carrots, potatoes and the all important Brussels sprouts are among the discounted food.

Shoppers have even suggested buying up more of the cheap veggies to turn into soups, which can then be frozen.

But some customers should be aware that they need to be signed up to loyalty schemes in some cases, though this can be done for free.

The exact veg discounted varies and we've included just the ones that are part of the offer, plus the total cost and weight, where available.

Tesco was the joint cheapest along with Aldi based on price per 100g, though there's just a penny difference between them and others.

As the items and amounts can vary, it could be worth spending the extra penny though – we've listed all the items on offer below.

Plus, visiting a shop further away could end up costing you more in fuel.

Here's what you can get where.

Asda

  • Sprouts: 19p (500g)
  • Carrots: 19p (1kg)
  • Parsnips: 19p (500g)
  • Broccoli: 19p (360g)

Veg deal total: 76p, four items (2.36kg) – £0.03 per 100g

You don't need any loyalty card to pick up Asda's cheap veg deal, which is available now.

Its deal has the fewest items, along with Morrisons, so you'll have to pick up dinner table essentials separately for more.

For example, we found the cheapest potatoes priced at 50p for 2kg at the time of writing.

Tesco

  • Sprouts: 15p (500g)
  • Carrots: 15p (800g)
  • Potatoes: 15p (2kg)
  • Parsnips: 15p (500g)
  • Broccoli: 15p (375g)
  • Swede: 15p (min 400g)
  • Red cabbage: 15p (various)

Veg deal total: £1.05, seven items (4.58kg) – £0.02 per 100g

Tesco prices are only available for those with a Clubcard.

Without one, you'll pay between 48p and 99p at full price, so make sure you scan the card at the till.

Shoppers can pick up seven items in total – more than any other supermarket – and it weighs in at nearly 5kg worth of veggies.

Sainsbury's

  • Sprouts: 19p (500g)
  • Carrots: 19p (1kg)
  • Potatoes: 15p (2kg)
  • Parsnips: 19p (500g)
  • Swede: 19p (various)
  • Cabbage, red or white: 19p (various)

Veg deal total: £1.14, six items (4kg) – £0.03 per 100g

Prices at Sainsbury's are only for those with a Nectar card.

You'll pay between 60p and £1 if you're not signed up to the loyalty scheme.

Shoppers get a decent number of items, six in total, and the haul weighs in at a decent 4kg.

Aldi

  • Sprouts: 15p (500g)
  • Carrots: 15p (1kg)
  • Potatoes: 15p (2kg)
  • Parsnips: 15p (500g)
  • Swede: 15p (min 600g)
  • Red cabbage: 15p (various)

Veg deal total: 90p, six items (4.6kg) – £0.02 per 100g

No loyalty card is needed for this Aldi offer.

You get six items totalling 4.6kg, but you won't be able to buy the veg online.

The discount supermarket doesn't offer delivery so you'll have to head to store to pick up these bargains.

Lidl

  • Sprouts: 15p (500g)
  • Carrots: 15p (500g)
  • Potatoes: 15p (2kg)
  • Parsnips: 15p (500g)
  • Swede: 15p (each)
  • Shallots: 15p (300g)

Veg deal total: 90p, six items (3.8kg) – £0.03 per 100g

Another supermarket where you won't need to sign up to a loyalty scheme.

Lidl has slashed the price of six veg items, thought you do get slightly less in terms on weight than others.

Again, you'll have to head to a store, as the discounter doesn't do home delivery.

Morrisons

  • Sprouts: 19p (500g)
  • Carrots: 19p (1kg)
  • Parsnips: 19p (500g)
  • Swede: 19p (each)

Veg deal total: 76p, four items (2kg) – £0.04 per 100g

At Morrisons, you can fill your baskets with four different veg items for just 19p – you'll need a More Than card to get the cheaper prices.

It's the priciest deal of all, but just a few pence in it, so little difference overall.
