<\/p>\nTHE country's most affordable supermarket has been revealed and prices are lower than last year.<\/p>\n
Shoppers\u00a0could save \u00a320.62 buying a basket of goods at the cheapest supermarket, compared to the most expensive, according to analysis by Which?.<\/p>\n

The monthly data compares the price of 47 popular items at eight of the biggest UK supermarkets to find where costs the most – and least.<\/p>\n
Aldi stole the crown as the cheapest shop with a basket costing \u00a376.77 on average.<\/p>\n
The budget retailer regained the title after Lidl was named the cheapest basket in October, ending Aldi's 16-month streak.<\/p>\n
There's also evidence that goods are slightly cheaper this December, compared to last year.<\/p>\n
A basket Aldi cost \u00a377.21 last December – 44p more than this year's basket.<\/p>\n Waitrose\u00a0was the most expensive shop this month, with a basket of groceries totalling \u00a397.39 on average, which is 26% more than Aldi, or a difference of \u00a321.<\/p>\n Last December, a basket at Waitrose cost a whopping \u00a3104.11 – \u00a36.72 more than this year.<\/p>\n All supermarket were cheaper for a basket of goods this year compared to December 2022.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Here are the full rankings based on a basket of shopping (47 items)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Below is Which?'s data for a basket of goods from December 2022 (48 items)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n The consumer group also compared the cost of a larger trolley with 134 items.<\/p>\n This includes branded items, such as Andrex toilet paper and Cathedral City cheese, and did not include discounter supermarkets\u00a0Aldi\u00a0and Lidl because they don't always stock these products.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Asda came out as cheapest for the trolley of groceries with a cost of \u00a3328.15 on average, beating the next cheapest, Morrisons, by \u00a310.01.<\/p>\n Waitrose was again the most expensive supermarket coming in at \u00a3369.80 which was \u00a341.65 more expensive than Asda.<\/p>\n Sainsbury\u2019s was second most expensive at \u00a3360.26 for those shopping without a Nectar card.\u00a0<\/p>\n Here are the full rankings based on a trolley full of items (134 items)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Below is Which?'s data for a trolley from December 2022 (48 items)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n The five supermarkets above were also cheaper this year, compared to last.<\/p>\n It comes after shop price\u00a0inflation eased for the sixth month in a row as retailers compete fiercely for customers ahead of Christmas.<\/p>\n Food\u00a0inflation slowed to 7.8% from October\u2019s 8.8%, the seventh consecutive drop and its lowest rate since last July.<\/p>\n Overall inflation was 4.6% in the year to October,\u00a0down from 6.7% in September.<\/p>\n High inflation means that the cost of everyday essentials is rising and therefore your\u00a0money\u00a0doesn't go as far.<\/p>\n When inflation drops it doesn't mean that prices have stopped rising it just means that they are rising at a slower rate.<\/p>\n Supermarkets are also finding themselves under increased scrutiny after the Competition and Markets Authority\u00a0over their loyalty schemes.<\/p>\n As supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury\u2019s now only offer most of their discounts to loyalty scheme members, this could risk creating a two-tier system, the\u00a0CMA\u00a0said.<\/p>\n The watchdog said it will launch a new investigation into the loyalty schemes.<\/p>\n Shopping at cheaper supermarkets is just one way to save money on your food shopping.<\/p>\n You could also try making a list beforehand as you'll be less likely to make any rash purchases.<\/p>\n Buying supermarkets' own-brand goods instead of big name brands will also help slash costs.<\/p>\n Some supermarkets also run "wonky" veg schemes, where you pay less for fresh produce that's misshapen or imperfect and still perfectly tasty.<\/p>\n For example, Lidl's\u00a0Waste Not scheme\u00a0means you can get five kilos of fruit and veg for just \u00a31.50.<\/p>\n Checking how much a product costs per unit is a handy way to find the best value.<\/p>\n Look at the price per kg\/lb\/litre so you're making a like-for-like decision.<\/p>\n And when shopping, don't forget about supermarket loyalty schemes, where you can build up points to spend on a later shop.<\/p>\n For example, Sainsbury's has Nectar and Tesco has Clubcard.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/newspress-collage-jgysdds5t-1701706712251.jpg\")
