When Ember launched their first self-heating mug, they elevated the coffee drinking game. And this year, they released the second generation of their travel mug.

The 12oz Travel Mug, which can fill up a tall drink if you're a Starbucks fan, allows you to take your hot brew on the go while keeping your drink at the temperature you like.

You might argue that it's a bit over-the-top to use a self-heating mug but for me, it's a game changer. It's also something that makes it luxury.

I'm a coffee and tea drinker and I have tried reusable mugs and vacuum flasks before, so what's the difference between those and the Ember Travel Mug 2+?

The smart tumbler has a touch panel on the Ember logo where you can check the battery level and set an exact drinking temperature between 50°C and 62.5 °C , which is the ideal range to sip your cuppa without burning your mouth.

Once fully charged, it has a battery life of three hours, great for taking a stroll in a park. It also has a leakproof lid that prevents any spillage.

But on a work-from-home day, I'd keep it on the charging coaster to keep my drink warm all day long. I wish it had a USB charger so I could plug it into my laptop but instead, I have to find the nearest socket.

A special feature of this Ember Travel Mug 2+ is the "Find My" features partnered with Apple. But to be honest, I'm not sure why they put it as a selling point, do people misplace their coffee mugs all the time? Plus I don't own an iPhone, so this function becomes obsolete.

The Ember app on Android only allows me to personalise the travel mug, set the temperature on a dial and check battery life, which I can mostly do on the mug itself.

The temperature control on the mug, however, is amazing and as I compared it to the traditional vacuum flask, the Ember one can detect the temperature of the liquid inside and make sure it's never too hot to drink.

You can also preset the temperature according to the chart in the app. It suggests keeping the mug at 55C if you are having a latte, or 58.5C for black tea.

A reminder also lights up when the battery is low or it's empty. When the battery runs out, it doesn't keep the drink warm because of the lack of double-walled insulation.

I love using the Ember Travel Mug 2+ and I treat it as a small luxury that I can enjoy every day. It comes at a high price point (£199.95) but this could be a lovely Christmas gift for your loved one.

There are, of course, other options in the market just like this Cosori Pressure-Activated Mug Warmer, £52, but it's not portable.

B&Q is selling Ingenious Heated Travel Mug for £25, which has a full stainless steel design and a button panel for settings.
