It was created as a way to promote digestion.<\/p>\n<p>It then became known as Pepsi-Cola in 1898 before shortening to just Pepsi in 1961. Fizzy drink lovers couldn&apos;t quite believe it when the news was revealed.<\/p>\n<p>One social media said: &quot;I was today years old when I learned that.&quot; While another admitted they simply had no idea about the name.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb had been operating a soda fountain in his North Carolina, US, drug store where he served drinks he created himself. <\/p>\n<p>The most popular fizz he&apos;d sell was Brad&apos;s Drink, a soda made with a mix of sugar, water, caramel, lemon oil, kola nuts, nutmeg and other additives. <\/p>\n<p>He changed it to Pepsi-Cola in 1898, and by 1903, the soda syrup sold in pharmacies across North Carolina. Then in 1961, Caleb dropped Cola from the name so the drink could reflect the health benefits of the beverage. <\/p>\n<p>Some people thought the name came from pepsin, the chief digestive enzyme in the stomach that breaks down proteins.<\/p>\n<p>It has been reported Pepsi has 10 more calories and two more grams of sugar and carbohydrates than Coca-Cola.
