Use our calculator to find out how the 5% Ofgem price cap rise will affect your gas and electric costs in January<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span>MailOnline&#8217;s online calculator shows you how much your energy bill will go up<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A new online calculator reveals how much your energy bill will go up in January &#8211; after Ofgem announced its latest price cap rise of 5%.<\/p>\n<p>The average annual bill is set to increase by \u00a394 in the New Year, meaning most British houseaholds can expect to pay around \u00a31,931-a-year, up from \u00a31,834.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s price cap increase comes as another blow to households already struggling with the cost of living, and as an unwelcome reminder that the\u00a0inflation\u00a0crisis is far from over.<\/p>\n<p>The increase is driven almost entirely by rising wholesale energy costs due to market instability and global events, especially the war in\u00a0Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Energy consultancy Cornwall Insight predicts that the typical bill will fall to \u00a31,853 from the start of April, but will not drop below today&#8217;s level until July next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor Jeremy Hunt made no mention of any further help to offset household energy bills in Wednesday&#8217;s autumn statement.<\/p>\n<p>Starting with how your home is powered, enter your details into the Nous.co calculator below to see how your energy bills will change as the Ofgem\u00a0price cap goes up by \u00a394 from January:<span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/06\/78146239-12782933-image-a-13_1700722630135.jpg\" height=\"554\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The price cap will rise in January but is expected to drop slightly in the Spring before rising again for winter 2024<\/p>\n<p>Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley said: &#8216;This is a difficult time for many people, and any increase in bills will be worrying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But this rise &#8211; around the levels we saw in August &#8211; is a result of the wholesale cost of gas and electricity rising, which needs to be reflected in the price that we all pay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It is important that customers are supported and we have made clear to suppliers that we expect them to identify and offer help to those who are struggling with bills.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE &#8211;\u00a0Households told they could get up to \u00a310,000 off their bills over a decade if they live near to new pylons or substations<\/h3>\n<p>&#8216;We are also seeing the return of choice to the market, which is a positive sign and customers could benefit from shopping around, with a range of tariffs now available offering the security of a fixed rate or a more flexible deal that tracks below the price cap.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;People should weigh up all the information, seek independent advice from trusted sources and consider what is most important for them, whether that&#8217;s the lowest price or the security of a fixed deal.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Greg Marsh, CEO and co-founder of household money-saving tool Nous.co, said: &#8216;This is terrible news for struggling households \u2013 energy bills are rising just at the coldest time of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The Government&#8217; has opted not to renew its \u00a3400 energy support scheme. That means many households are facing their highest ever bills from January. Record numbers are already in debt from last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The increase will be especially painful for households with prepayment metres, who pay for the energy they use each month rather than spreading out the cost over the year. The Government urgently needs to step in to help those who can&#8217;t afford to heat their homes.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The energy price cap sets a limit on the maximum amount suppliers can charge households in England, Wales and Scotland for each unit of gas and electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Energy in Northern Ireland is regulated separately.<\/p>\n<p>The headline price cap figure is an average across households rather than an absolute cap on bills, so those that use more will pay more.<\/p>\n<p>The energy regulator is in charge of setting the maximum amount that energy suppliers are allowed to charge for each unit of gas and electricity.<\/p>\n<p>However they do not determine your final bill, meaning if you use more energy, you will spend more money.<\/p>\n<p>Cornwall Insight said recent milder weather was helping to bring down gas prices, and this could help reduce bills next year if it continued.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8216;sharp price falls are not expected&#8217;, it said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/06\/78135485-12782933-The_price_cap_announcement_comes_after_Chancellor_Jeremy_Hunt_ma-a-2_1700722533909.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The price cap announcement comes after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt made no mention of any further help to offset household energy bills in Wednesday&#8217;s autumn statement.
