for &#8216;not wearing a headscarf&#8217; and &#8216;disturbing the society&#8217;s mental security.&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sotoudeh, 60, who was awarded the European Parliament&#8217;s 2012 Sakharov prize for her human rights work, has been arrested several times in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My wife was arrested during the funeral of Armita Garawand along with others,&#8217; Reza Khandan, Sotoudeh&#8217;s husband, said, noting that she was &#8216;violently beaten&#8217; during the arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Geravand died just over a year after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, also a young Iranian Kurd, who was arrested by the morality police for allegedly breaching Iran&#8217;s strict women&#8217;s dress code in an incident that sparked mass protests.<\/p>\n<p>Covering the neck and head in public has been compulsory for women since 1983, following Iran&#8217;s 1979 Islamic revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Women have been increasingly flouting the Islamic republic&#8217;s strict dress code since months-long demonstrations which erupted in September last year following Amini&#8217;s death in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Amini had previously been arrested for allegedly violating the dress code.<\/p>\n<p>Sotoudeh herself was previously imprisoned in 2018 after defending a woman arrested for demonstrating against the compulsory headscarf in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Then in 2019, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of &#8216;encouraging corruption and debauchery.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Garawand&#8217;s case was first reported on October 3 by Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw, which said she had been critically wounded during an incident on the Tehran metro involving Iran&#8217;s morality police.<\/p>\n<p>But authorities say she suffered a sudden drop in blood pressure and denied that any &#8216;physical or verbal altercations&#8217; had taken place.<\/p>\n<p>Metro surveillance footage, which had been broadcast on state television, showed the unveiled teenager being evacuated after apparently fainting in a carriage.<\/p>\n<p>Armita Geravand fell into a coma earlier this month after she sustained &#8216;severe injuries&#8217; following an alleged &#8216;physical assault&#8217; by female morality police officers on the Tehran metro<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/28\/09\/77110235-12682579-image-a-23_1698481969667.jpg\" height=\"565\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Her case has been likened to that of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old woman whose death while in the custody of morality police prompted nationwide protests last year<\/p>\n<p>Just seconds later, her limp body is carried off.<\/p>\n<p>Geravand&#8217;s mother and father appeared in state media footage saying a blood pressure issue, a fall or perhaps both contributed to their daughter&#8217;s injury.<\/p>\n<p>Unverified CCTV footage, shared to local media earlier this month, appears to show the teenager walking towards the train without a hijab on with two of her friends.<\/p>\n<p>Upon entering the cabin, one of the girls is seen immediately backing off and reaching for the ground before another girl is dragged unconscious from the cabin by passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Several passengers can be seen gathering around to watch the girl be carried off.<\/p>\n<p>Hengaw later shared a photo of a young girl lying in a hospital bed with several pieces of medical equipment attached to her, claiming it was an image of Armita.<\/p>\n<p>A source told an Iranian news agency that she was &#8216;brought into hospital in a comatose state&#8217; and needed CPR as she had either ceased breathing or her heart had stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities denied that this was a case of state abuse against yet another young woman.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Tehran Metro Operating Company, Masoud Dorosti, said the CCTV footage showed no sign of verbal or physical conflict between passengers or company employees.<\/p>\n<p>Activists have demanded an independent investigation by the United Nations&#8217; fact-finding mission on Iran, citing the theocracy&#8217;s use of pressure on victims&#8217; families and state TV&#8217;s history of airing hundreds of coerced confessions.<\/p>\n<p>The IRNA, Iran&#8217;s state-run news agency, did not touch on any controversy surrounding Geravand&#8217;s injury in their report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Unfortunately, the brain damage to the victim caused her to spend some time in a coma and she died a few minutes ago,&#8217; the IRNA reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;According to the official theory of Armita Geravand doctors, after a sudden drop in blood pressure, she suffered a fall, a brain injury, followed by continuous convulsions, decreased cerebral oxygenation and cerebral oedema.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The teenager was being treated at Tehran&#8217;s Fajr Hospital under tight security.<\/p>\n<p>Following the news of her death, Maryam Rajavi, The President-elect of the NCRI for the period to transfer sovereignty to the people of Iran, posted on X, formerly Twitter: &#8216;I offer my sincere condolences for the loss of #ArmitaGaravand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Once again, the religious fascism ruling #Iran has taken an innocent girl from us under the bogus excuse of improper veiling. The repressive forces aim to prevent people&#8217;s uprising and protest by besieging the hospital and employing oppressive measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Yet, they are unaware that the people, especially the youth of Iran, as well as my fellow Iranian girls and women, remain determined to overthrow the mullahs&#8217; regime and replace it with democracy and people&#8217;s sovereignty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The inhumane and misogynistic policies and practices of the mullahs&#8217; regime against women have nothing to do with Islam and the Quran and are only a means to continue the disgraceful rule of the Velayat-e Faqih regime. No to compulsory religion, no to compulsory government, and no to compulsory hijab.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Geravand&#8217;s injury also came as Iran has put its morality police &#8211; whom activists implicate in Amini&#8217;s death &#8211;
