{"id":142816,"date":"2023-10-17T21:51:36","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T21:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theprojectsworld.com\/?p=142816"},"modified":"2023-10-17T21:51:36","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T21:51:36","slug":"how-brussels-became-the-terror-capital-of-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theprojectsworld.com\/world-news\/how-brussels-became-the-terror-capital-of-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"How Brussels became the terror capital of Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How Brussels became the terror capital of Europe: As another ISIS fanatic brings carnage to Belgium, how migrant ghettos turned into a breeding ground for fanaticism that has sparked some of Europe&#8217;s worst atrocities<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>READ MORE: Belgian cops shoot suspect dead after manhunt for ISIS fanatic<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not for the first time, Brussels has been rocked by a terror atrocity thought to have been carried out by an Islamic State fanatic.<\/p>\n<p>A gunman, who was armed with an automatic rifle, murdered two Swedish football supporters who had been out enjoying their night out in the Belgian capital.<\/p>\n<p>Abdesalem Lassoued, 45, believed to have been an asylum seeker of Tunisian origin, was shot dead by police in a caf\u00e9 in the Schaerbeek area the next day, following an intensive overnight manhunt.<\/p>\n<p>He had been living illegally in the municipality, a poor area of the city home to a large immigrant population, many of whom come from Turkey and north Africa and are of Muslim faith.<\/p>\n<p>The neighbourhood came into focus following the 2016 Brussels bombings, and is situated a stones throw away from Molenbeek, another area marred by its history of terrorist activity.<\/p>\n<p>Areas like these, experts say, can become &#8216;incubators of violent extremism&#8217; of Brussels, and have seen hostilities erupt into street violence over the years.<\/p>\n<p><span>Spates of stabbings have taken place, including of police officers, and addresses have been subject to police raids over radicalistion fears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Almost every time (an Islamic terrorist atrocity occurs) there is a link with Molenbeek,&#8217; the then-Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel admitted in 2015.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Molenbeek&#8217;s links to terrorist activity stretch back to 2001, when terrorists who assassinated Ahmad Shah Massoud, an Afghan politician who opposed the Taliban, were sheltered there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anti-terrorism investigations went on to be conducted in the district in the wake of the 2004 Madrid train bombings, the 2014 Jewish Museum attack in Brussels, and following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Once known as &#8216;Little Manchester&#8217; due to its industrial past, Molenbeek has frequently been named one of the poorest areas in Belgium, and is separated from more wealthy neighbourhoods by a canal.<\/p>\n<p>High unemployment rates, three times the national average, plague the young population of the north Brussels municipality, and recent reports suggest a rise in drug dealing in the area.<\/p>\n<p>With families turning to the drugs trade &#8216;as a business model,&#8217; anthropologist Johan Leman told Foreign Policy that ISIS\u00a0used drug dealing networks to recruit members in the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>While attacks by Islamist extremists had been scarce before the recent shooting, residents have also expressed worry that jihadist sleeper cells could be operating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/17\/16\/76664495-12639643-image-a-4_1697555205196.jpg\" height=\"468\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>In March 2016, suicide bombers believed to be part of an IS cell struck at Brussels airport and on the city Metro<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/17\/16\/76664511-12639643-image-a-18_1697556557373.jpg\" height=\"466\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>A private security guard helps a wounded women outside the Maalbeek metro station in Brussels in March 2016<\/p>\n<p>At the height of ISIS&#8217;s power in 2016, almost 500 fighters left Belgium bound for Iraq and Syria, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p>The International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation found that Belgium was Europe&#8217;s biggest source of jihadi fighters in Syria and Iraq at the time.<\/p>\n<p>It was said to be supplying about 40 militants for every million inhabitants &#8211;
