{"id":141961,"date":"2023-09-21T20:43:02","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T20:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theprojectsworld.com\/?p=141961"},"modified":"2023-09-21T20:43:02","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T20:43:02","slug":"royal-mail-row-over-cat-which-clawed-fingers-through-letterbox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theprojectsworld.com\/world-news\/royal-mail-row-over-cat-which-clawed-fingers-through-letterbox\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Mail row over cat which &apos;clawed fingers through letterbox&apos;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Postmen threatened to stop delivering to couple&#8217;s home over claims their cat was &#8216;clawing at their fingers&#8217; through the letterbox<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lee Haynes and Jo Woodley were told their cat was causing trouble for postmen<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The pair say their three-year-old pet Ernie\u00a0was just playing\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Royal Mail threatened to stop delivering to a couple over claims their miscreant cat was attacking postal workers through the letterbox.<\/p>\n<p>A letter sent to Lee Haynes and Jo Woodley said their tabby&#8217;s roaming paws were making visits to their house dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The pair say Ernie, a &#8216;placid&#8217; three-year-old, was just playing &#8211; but Royal Mail asked for action to protect its workers.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Mail has been involved in several controversies recently, including a plan to hike the price of a\u00a0first-class stamp\u00a0and end Saturday deliveries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also failed to hit delivery targets in every British postcode.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Haynes and Ms Woodley from Tamworth, Staffordshire, have now installed an exterior letterbox to protect postal workers from their cat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Haynes, a school site worker, 44, said: &#8216;It&#8217;s hilarious. He&#8217;s such a placid cat and this is like he&#8217;s got some kind of ASBO.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/21\/13\/75681405-12544777-image-a-13_1695298838362.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ernie the cat, pictured, threatened postal workers delivering letters to his owners&#8217; Lee Haynes and Jo Woodley&#8217;s home in Tamworth, Staffordshire<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/21\/13\/75681389-12544777-image-a-16_1695298654339.jpg\" height=\"851\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lee Haynes, pictured with his partner Jo Woodley and their cat, Ernie, had to install an exterior letterbox\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s so funny. They&#8217;ve sent [the letter] all the way from Plymouth, instead of just sticking a note on the door.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s not malicious. It&#8217;s a game to him.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Haynes described his pet as &#8216;an indoor cat&#8217;, who spends much of his life &#8216;lounging about&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But when he hears the letterbox he jumps into action.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Haynes said: &#8216;Ernie spends most of his time lying down but he&#8217;s just fascinated by the letterbox.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;As soon as he hears it he&#8217;s there like a lightning bolt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;His paw comes out the letterbox to try and grab whatever&#8217;s there, but maybe he&#8217;s accidentally grabbing the postman&#8217;s fingers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/21\/13\/75682751-12544777-image-a-14_1695299915860.jpg\" height=\"951\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ernie, pictured, jumps at the letterbox anytime someone tries to post a letter through the door<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/21\/13\/75682749-12544777-image-a-16_1695299960758.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The Royal Mail said they had an obligation to protect their staff from animal attacks<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;He doesn&#8217;t use his claws, just the pads of his paws to try and grab the letter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But I wonder if the postman thought he might scratch.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The letter, sent in July, was titled &#8216;Potential suspension of deliveries to your address&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>It said: &#8216;We&#8217;re experiencing difficulties in delivering mail to your address because of the actions of a cat at your property.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Your cat is behind the letterbox clawing at mail and fingers.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The letter continues, suggesting ways the couple could combat the problem.<\/p>\n<p>It says they have 14 days from the date the letter was received to take action &#8211;
