about how ill their child is should &#8216;always be listened to&#8217; as he backed a campaign calling for parents to be allowed to seek a second opinion over a diagnosis in A&amp;E.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after Health Secretary Steve Barclay pledged he will look at calls for the campaign &#8211; following the death of 13-year-old Martha Mills (pictured) who died of sepsis after failures in her treatment at King&#8217;s College Hospital<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think what&#8217;s frustrating in the case of sepsis is that it is preventable, and that is why it leaves parents so devastated and confused and angry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We think there are around 12,000 preventable deaths.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;On World Sepsis Day, which is today, this is a time to really focus minds on the way that we diagnose people arriving in A&amp;E in the context of sepsis.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Crown actor described Maud, who died in 2011, as a &#8216;bubbly child&#8217; who was full of confidence and liked to sing on the bus.<\/p>\n<p>Watkins has joined forces with the UK Sepsis Trust to help raise awareness of the condition among the public and doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Maud developed a chest infection, which was treated by her doctor with medication around the new year.<\/p>\n<p>After her condition did not improve, Watkins and his wife Clara Francis took her to A&amp;E, where they were told she had a bad cold and croup before being discharged.<\/p>\n<p>Maud died at home later that night.<\/p>\n<p>It was only discovered later that she had developed sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to an infection that happens when the immune system overreacts and starts to damage the body&#8217;s own tissues and organs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/09\/75372405-12512475-Jason_Watkins_said_a_parent_s_instinct_of_how_ill_a_child_is_sho-m-22_1694594335390.jpg\" height=\"370\" width=\"633\"><\/p>\n<p>Jason Watkins said &#8216;a parent&#8217;s instinct of how ill a child is should always be listened to&#8217; said Watkins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She sang a lot. We used to get on the bus and she used to sing all the time in her pram.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She was just very bubbly and had a sense of humour and had confidence and directness about her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She was wonderful. It&#8217;s really heartbreaking that as our daughter Betty grows up she hasn&#8217;t got her sister to grow up with and all the things Betty is doing Maude won&#8217;t be able to do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My memories of her are often embroiled and mixed with the feelings of loss.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Watkins said that since making the documentary Jason &amp; Clara: In Memory of Maude, which aired earlier this year and has been nominated for a Welsh Bafta, he has turned his attention to remembering &#8216;all the happy times&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0&#8216;Martha&#8217;s Rule&#8217; gets a step closer: Family&#8217;s campaign to give hospital patients greater rights over their care following tragic death of their 13-year-old daughter wins support from across the political divide<\/h3>\n<p>He said more must be done to make sure doctors in the UK get regular sepsis training to remind them of the range of symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>He also called for better clinical practise in the way people are diagnosed with sepsis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The idea that sepsis has to be ruled out first,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My thinking is that the diagnosis, particularly of children that arrive in A&amp;E, needs to be looked at. Sepsis is a difficult thing to diagnose and one&#8217;s default really should be to rule it out first.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sepsis should be at the top of everyone&#8217;s list.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Asked if Maude might still be alive if the default position then was to rule out sepsis first, Watkins said: &#8216;If sepsis had been at the top of the flagpole (when we took Maude into A&amp;E), then she would have remained in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Do I think she could have survived? I think if it was today that the hospital trust had the profile that some hospitals have of sepsis, I would say yes, because then, you know, she would have been assessed for sepsis and continued to have been assessed throughout her time in the hospital.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ron Daniels, founder and joint chief executive of the UK Sepsis Trust, said doctors should have a &#8216;high index of suspicion&#8217; about sepsis.<\/p>\n<p>He also called for more awareness among the general public so they are confident to ask health professionals: &#8216;Could it be sepsis?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;If there&#8217;s a risk of sepsis, it can present in so many different ways, so clinicians need to have a high index of suspicion. They need to look for sepsis and really be alert.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;To get this right demands that we have this partnership between the public who asks that question &#8211; could it be sepsis? &#8211; and health professionals who think sepsis.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He also touched on the call for Martha&#8217;s rule &#8211; which was instigated by Merope Mills after her daughter Martha died from sepsis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/13\/09\/69310317-12512475-Mother_Clara_explained_This_is_where_Maude_was_born_I_had_her_at-a-21_1694594246518.jpg\" height=\"357\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Maude&#8217;s mother Clara explained previously: &#8216;This is where Maude was born, I had her at home and it&#8217;s also where she died. Even after 11 years, you know, it&#8217;s still sort of shocking&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Mills and her husband Paul Laity raised concerns about Martha&#8217;s deteriorating health a number of times but they were not acted upon.<\/p>\n<p>A coroner ruled that Martha would most likely have survived if doctors had identified the warning signs of sepsis and transferred her to intensive care earlier.<\/p>\n<p>If introduced, Martha&#8217;s rule would give families a statutory right to get a second opinion if they have concerns about care.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Daniels said: &#8216;Something we really want to highlight is families not being listened to by health professionals.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0&#8216;There&#8217;s a golden hour you have to jump on&#8217;: Jason Watkins details the importance of reacting fast to Sepsis symptoms as he reflects on losing daughter Maude, 2, to the condition<\/h3>\n<p>&#8216;This was a theme with Maud&#8217;s illness, this was a theme in the case of Martha Mills &#8211; that parental concern or relatives&#8217; concern for adults is not often taken as seriously as it should be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There is variation between hospitals, there&#8217;s variation between regions, with some doing a lot better than others. And we have to standardise it.
