This Terminator-like striker is unstoppable even on his worst days and his lethal finishing provided an extra dimension to City&#8217;s arsenal last year.<\/p>\n<p>Once he arrived from Dortmund, City became untouchable. He scored 12 goals in the Champions League and a staggering 52 in all competitions, underling the fact that he truly was the final piece in Pep Guardiola&#8217;s all-conquering puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>Expect him to be similarly devastating this time around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It went well!<\/p>\n<p>Quite simply, they beat several of the world&#8217;s biggest clubs and emerged head and shoulders above them at the end of the campaign. They make up part of Pot One in this week&#8217;s draw despite their lowly 12th-placed finish in LaLiga.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, Jose Luis Mendilibar, the club&#8217;s third boss of the campaign and the man responsible for steering them to their memorable victory over Roma in Budapest, placed all of his eggs in one particular basket and the approach paid off handsomely.<\/p>\n<p>They are currently in something of a crisis, however.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom of the Spanish top-flight and rumoured to have placed a host of their first-team squad on the transfer market due their debts, it would take a miracle for Mendilibar to drag Sevilla to any form of glory in the Champions League this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; YOUSSEF EN-NESYRI<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A crashing header against Manchester City in the UEFA Super Cup neatly encapsulated En-Nesyri&#8217;s all-round game and justified the big-name interest in him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has been prominent under Mendilibar and remains Sevilla&#8217;s first-choice, out-and-out frontman, one capable of crashing runs into the box and physical hold-up play.<\/p>\n<p>West Ham are understood to be keen on him but if his current club are able to retain his services beyond deadline day, he will be key in their Champions League mission.<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just like City&#8217;s, it ended in a trophy list and wild, rowdy celebrations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, faced as they are with a tough likely draw and surrounded by teams harbouring similar ambitions, this year could well be a chastening one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 2\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74879035-12456767-image-a-32_1693407746213.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Sevilla triumphed in the Europa League and sealed themselves a Champions League spot<\/p>\n<p><span>Barcelona<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Heavyweights Barcelona won LaLiga last year, their first league title since 2019, and will hope their success signals the beginning of a period of domination.<\/p>\n<p>Their on-pitch success continues to be overshadowed by their financial headache away from it, however, with the club still saddled by jaw-dropping amounts of debt.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, they are yet to splash the cash this summer and have in fact recruited just three players. Two of them, Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez, joined as free agents while midfielder Oriel Romeu arrived from Girona for around \u00a33million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Boss Xavi will hope to mould his squad of exquisite talents and raw academy products into a juggernaut capable of breezing through the knockout rounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If there is anyone who has been there, done it and grabbed the Champions League T-shirt, it&#8217;s the aging but still just as lethal Lewandowski.<\/p>\n<p>The striker joined last summer from Bayern Munich and scored 33 goals across all competitions, including five in five matches in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>He will certainly be targeting a greater tally this year.<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, it was a failure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They were knocked out of the Champions League in the group phase after finishing third, behind Bayern and Inter, the eventual finalists.<\/p>\n<p>That saw them drop into the Europa League but again, they fell short at the first time of asking, with Manchester United dispatching them in the knockout round play-off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 3\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74878917-12456767-image-m-34_1693407768189.jpg\" height=\"484\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Barcelona are not among the favourites but may well go far thanks to their talented squad<\/p>\n<p><span>Napoli<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fresh from securing a third Serie A title last season but losing head coach Luciano Spalletti to a surprise sabbatical, optimism is abound at Napoli.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rudi Garcia is the latest man at the helm and he undoubtedly has big shoes to fill, especially given Spalletti&#8217;s success on both the domestic and international stages.<\/p>\n<p>But after a summer of changes, Napoli look equipped to fight across multiple fronts once again. Crucially, they have won their opening two league matches this year.<\/p>\n<p>Having gone 33 years without success in the Italian top-flight, they will now set their sights on shaking up the pack in the Champions League, which they have never won.<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; VICTOR OSIMHEN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A striker on the radars of countless clubs worldwide, Osimhen was quick off the mark this campaign and even scored his 100th goal for Napoli last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>His all-round ability provides his side with an invaluable sharp edge up front and this, combined with the talents of those around him, makes for a side easy on the eye.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The question is whether he is in Naples when the Champions League rolls around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Supporters took pride in their willingness to go toe-to-toe with clubs last season.<\/p>\n<p>This approach enabled them to top their group, pipping Liverpool and Ajax, and carried them through the last-16, in which they brushed aside Eintracht Frankfurt.<\/p>\n<p>They fell in the quarter-finals, however, after being bettered by Italian rivals AC Milan.<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 3\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74879063-12456767-image-a-71_1693410365721.jpg\" height=\"405\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Napoli went toe-to-toe with their opponents in Europe before losing out to rivals AC Milan<\/p>\n<p><span>Bayern Munich<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They may be dominant in the Bundesliga, despite needing a final day win to clinch the title last season, but Bayern Munich continue to shoot themselves in the foot.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Julian Nagelsmann, of course, was ruthlessly handing his marching orders in March and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who has failed to win over demanding matchgoers. He has been criticised for rigid, inflexible displays and questionable tactics.<\/p>\n<p>But regardless, he has a strong squad at his disposal. Harry Kane arrived from Tottenham in a sensational \u00a3100m deal and he will slot straight in as their first-choice No 9, flanked by the likes of Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane.<\/p>\n<p>They have won their first two league matches this season but lost in the DFB-Pokal, with RB Leipzig emerging victorious and marring Kane&#8217;s much-awaiting debut.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; HARRY KANE<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With 45 goals to his name in UEFA club competitions, Kane is ready-made for a Champions League charge and was primarily snatched up for this very purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He will certainly be provided with plenty of chances this season and Tuchel will hope his No 9 can step up again, as he has done time and time again across his career.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No pressure, then, Harry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite Bayern cruising through the group stage and easing beyond Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16, Nagelsmann lost his job shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>Tuchel&#8217;s first Champions League match at the helm came in a 3-0 quarter-final defeat by Manchester City and from there, there was no way back.<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 4\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74878907-12456767-image-m-44_1693407957133.jpg\" height=\"460\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Harry Kane (right) joined Bayern Munich this summer in search of his maiden club trophy<\/p>\n<p><span><span>Paris Saint-Germain<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The death knell for any PSG manager is failure in the Champions League and Luis Enrique will be under no illusions that the same mountain faces him this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He picked up the baton after Christophe Galtier was dismissed at the end of the last campaign and must find a way to gel Kylian Mbappe and his unruly team-mates into a cohesive band capable of performing as a collective, rather than individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Mbappe will now remain put despite his insistence that he would not sign a new contract, a stance that once again alerted Real Madrid, and they have recruited well.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Goncalo Ramos, Xavi Simons, Marco Asensio, Milan Skriniar and Manuel Ugarte are shrewd, cost-effective acquisitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; KYLIAN MBAPPE<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Capable of deciding matches single-handedly, such is his otherworldly ability, Mbappe can prove his total commitment this season by firing PSG to European glory.<\/p>\n<p>Infamously, they have never won the competition but a blend of Mbappe and the star-studded forwards dotted about him will surely carry them to the latter stages.<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s efforts ended in disappointment once again.<\/p>\n<p>PSG were dispatched in the last-16 by Bayern Munich and, in truth, failed to mount much of a fight after failing to score across both legs.<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 4\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74878923-12456767-image-m-46_1693407972298.jpg\" height=\"499\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Kylian Mbappe will remain at PSG this summer and will be crucial to their silverware ambitions<\/p>\n<p><span>Benfica<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under the impressive Roger Schmidt, Benfica won the Primeira Liga and made impressive in-roads in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n<p>Their form was particularly notable in light of the sheer length of their season, which began in early August in the third qualifying round for the European competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Angel Di Maria returned to the club this summer after leaving Juventus and turning down a multitude of other offers, while Benfica also spent money wisely.<\/p>\n<p>They have been strengthened by the arrivals of Orkun Kokcu, Arthur Cabral and Andrea Schjelderup in particular and will look to impose themselves again this year.<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; ANGEL DI MARIA<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The veteran forward has hit the ground running back in Portugal, having mustered up two goals in his first three league appearances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In fact, he has three goals to his name in total this season after also netting in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira.<\/p>\n<p>Di Maria clearly has much to offer and will be key to Benfica&#8217;s future ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Forced to reach the group stage the hard way after beating Midtjylland and Dynamo Kyiv in the qualifying and play-off rounds respectively, Benfica were able to finish top of a group also containing PSG and Juventus with a tally of 14 points.<\/p>\n<p>They then beat Club Brugge in the last-16 before valiantly falling short against Inter Milan in the final eight, despite drawing the second leg 3-3 at the San Siro.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 2\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74879203-12456767-image-a-47_1693408003034.jpg\" height=\"440\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Angel Di Maria has returned to Benfica, his former club, after leaving Juventus this summer<\/p>\n<p><span>Feyenoord<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Arne Slot has made no secret of his excitement for this year&#8217;s Champions League.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to blame him, too, considering he is the man responsible for leading Feyenoord to the promised land after only their second Eredivisie title in a century.<\/p>\n<p>Slot turned down interest from Tottenham ahead of the new season to remain in place in Holland and he will be targeting yet another shock on the European stage.<\/p>\n<p>They have been reluctant to throw huge sums at players, preferring instead to be frugal in their spending, and currently sit sixth in the league on five points.<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; YANKUBA MINTEH<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Minteh has enjoyed a meteoric rise from humble beginnings in Gambia and joined Newcastle in the Premier League earlier this season before being sent out on loan.<\/p>\n<p>Feyenoord were his destination and he has already caught the eye.<\/p>\n<p>During the recent 6-1 victory over Almere, Minteh carved open the opposition with relative easy and looked every inch the talent that triggered Newcastle into action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Slot&#8217;s side edged through their Europa League group by the skin of their teeth. Miraculously, each of the four teams finished the stage on exactly eight points.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Feyenoord progressed as group winners courtesy of goals scored and set up a tie with Shakhtar Donetsk, who they beat 8-2 on aggregate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Roma, though.<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 1\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74879207-12456767-image-a-48_1693408043456.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Feyenoord win only their second Eredivisie title in a century last season and hold big ambitions<\/p>\n<p><span>POT TWO<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Arsenal\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After a lengthy six-year wait, Arsenal can finally relish the prospect of competing in the Champions League once again this campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Having finished second in the Premier League, an agonising feat after their dominance over the division for much of the season, they secured a spot in Pot Two as a result of their UEFA club coefficient, meaning they will face a side from Pot One.<\/p>\n<p>Mikel Arteta will be eager to bring an end to his side&#8217;s woes in Europe and has strengthened effectively this summer in a bid to bring about more competition.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya are their big-name additions to date, with Rice in particularly an eye-catching poach from West Ham. This year, they look a formidable unit and will hope to become one of the surprise packages.<\/p>\n<p>Already this season, they have beaten Bayern Munich to clinch silverware and this may bode well for the rest of the campaign under talented boss Marco Rose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; DANI OLMO<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Olmo was simply majestic in the DFL-Supercup final earlier this month and scored a deserved hat-trick, with two of his goals stemming from his individual brilliance.<\/p>\n<p>He is a tricky playmaker capable of playing a number of positions and has often been the man to make Leipzig tick. MOHAMED ELYOUNOUSSI<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A summer addition at Copenhagen after playing 37 games in all competitions last season for relegated Southampton.<\/p>\n<p>He started the second-leg of their knockout victory to get to the group stage, and the Danish side will be hoping he can add to the goals &#8211; despite netting just for Southampton in 2022-23.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Danish champions will be hoping for a more favourable draw than the one they received last season.<\/p>\n<p>They were placed in a group with eventual Champions League winners Man City, Europa League winners Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund.<\/p>\n<p>The Danes conceded 11 goals without scoring in the away fixtures, but did well to hold all three of their opposition to draws at home.<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; Their taste of glory is richly merited.<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; ELYE WAHI<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Striker Wahi joined on a five-year contract from Ligue 1 rivals Montpellier and looks the perfect replacement for Lois Openda, who has left for RB Leipzig.<\/p>\n<p>Wahi had also been linked with the likes of Chelsea and West Ham off the back of his impressive displays last season, in which he scored 19 goals in 33 league outings.<\/p>\n<p><span>LAST EUROPEAN CAMPAIGN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lens last featured in Europe during the 2007-08 season, in the UEFA Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They progressed through several qualifying rounds to reach the first round but could move no further, resulting in them crashing out at an early hurdle.<\/p>\n<p><span>DANGER RATING &#8211; 2\/5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/08\/30\/16\/74880039-12456767-image-a-66_1693409375757.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lens last competed in Europe in 2007-08 but finished second only to PSG last season<\/p>\n<p><span>Real Sociedad\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A superb 2022-23 campaign that saw Real Sociedad finish fourth in LaLiga clinched a spot in the Champions League for the first time since 2013-14.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, since the European Cup was reborn in its current format in 1992, Sociedad have qualified just twice &#8211; the other achievement coming in 2003-04.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, there was no play-off required. Instead, they are safe in the knowledge that they can now mount a real challenge in the group stage.<\/p>\n<p>Sociedad will prove a tough opponent for anyone, owing to the defensive solidity of Imanol Alguacil&#8217;s system and their potent creativity in the forward areas.<\/p>\n<p><span>ONE TO WATCH &#8211; MIKEL OYARZABAL<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A fully-fledged Spain international, Oyarzabal is a one-club man. He has made over 280 appearances for Sociedad and scored more than 80 goals during his rich stint.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His international debut arrived in 2016 and he has not looked back since for either club or country.
