Who is Anne Marie Morris? Tory MP facing calls to resign over use of the N-wordJanuary 31, 2022
ANNE Marie Morris is a Tory politician who was elected to represent Newton Abbot back in 2010.
The MP has been suspended by Theresa May for using the N-word during a public meeting and has drawn criticism from across the political spectrum.
Who is Anne Marie Morris?
Ms Morris was born in 1957 and was privately educated in Dorset at Bryanston School.
She studied law at Oxford University and then pursued a legal career.
After a career working as a corporate lawyer, Ms Morris subsequently became a marketing director for PriceWaterhouseCooper (PwC) and Ernst and Young.
Ms Morris sought a move into politics after her father suffered a heart-attack. Her passion for the NHS and care it provided for her father sparked this new ambition.
In the 2010 General Election, Ms Morris competed for the seat of Newton Abbot and and won with a 5% swing from the Liberal Democrats.
In the 2015 election, the MP increased her majority to 11,288 before increasing it further in the 2017 general election to 17,160.
What was Anne Marie Morris recorded saying?
During a public meeting in July 2017, the backbench MP argued that the prospect of leaving the EU without a deal was "the n***** in the woodpile".
Although Ms Morris apologised within hours there was widespread condemnation and calls for the MP to be kicked out of Parliament.
She was recorded saying: "Look at the detail, it isn’t all doom and gloom.
“Now we get to the real n***** in the woodpile – which is, in two years what happens if there is no deal?”
Theresa May said in response: “I was shocked to hear of these remarks, which are completely unacceptable. I immediately asked the Chief Whip to suspend the party whip.
“Language like this has absolutely no place in politics or in today’s society.”
The phrase she used is American in origin and has been considered grossly offensive for decades.
