When is the next General Election?

The next general election in the United Kingdom is scheduled for May  2022, under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011.

But, just as we saw in 2017, elections can be triggered sooner than expected, especially with the spectre of Brexit on the horizon.

What could cause a snap election?

The most likely cause at this moment is that Labour will collapse the government with a vote of no confidence.

The party has reportedly been urged to call for the vote after Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the Lib Dems and Plaid Cymru joined forces with more than 50 Labour MPs to demand Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn table a vote now – and back a second referendum.

Labour sources on Monday insisted they won’t put a vote until they are sure they can win – given the DUP’s pledge to back Theresa May for now.

However, this course became less likely after a cross-party Committee said a No Confidence motion doesn’t automatically trigger an Election.

The Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee said the PM would be expected to resign simply if Parliament expressed that it no longer had confidence in her government.
