ON Monday December 27, 2021 there were reports that were an earthquake in Texas.

Unlike other states Texas is not known for earthquakes, so Monday's came as a bit of a shock.

Was there an earthquake in Midland, Texas?

On December 27, 2021 an earthquake Twitter account reported that there had been an earthquake in Texas.

"#Earthquake (#sismo) M4.3 strikes 44 km NE of #Midland (#Texas) 11 min ago. More info: https://emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/earthquake.php?id=1081792" they wrote.

Other users took to Twitter to report on how rare an earthquake in Texas is.

"We just had an earthquake in west Texas. That's something we don't experience often," another user wrote.

How big was the earthquake in Texas?

The magnitude of the earthquake was reportedly 4.3 and reached a depth of 5km, it was registered just after 7.55pm.

The last earthquake of this magnitude to hit Texas was several years ago in 2018 according to Texas Almanac.

"On May 18, 2018, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in Johnson County near Venus. No major damage was reported," the site stated.

One user tweeted their suspicions about the earthquake writing:

"there was just a 4.3 earthquake in west Texas (likely related to all the fracking)."

What have officials said about the earthquake?

NewsWest9 Tweeted that multiple people reached out to report they felt the quake.

"Multiple viewers across West Texas have reached out to NewsWest 9 saying they felt the quake."

Texas officials have yet to make a public announcement on the earthquake.

Unlike California where earthquakes are normal, Texas does not experience such quakes often.

One user tweeted how rare the occurrence was writing:

"Needless to say, when I was growing up in Texas, you never heard about earthquakes in Midland or anywhere else."
