US singer Jerry Lee Lewis suffers stroke as 'family ask for fans' prayers'

The 83-year-old is said to be recovering at home in Memphis, Tennessee, after suffering a minor stroke on Wednesday.

The singer first shot to fame in 1950s and is best known for his hit Great Balls of Fire.

His family asked for fans' prayers in a statement and said he is expected to make a full recovery.

A family statement said: "Last night, Jerry Lee Lewis suffered a minor stroke.

"He is with his family, recuperating in Memphis and the doctors expect a full recovery.

"The Killer looks forward to getting back into the studio soon to record a Gospel record and on the road performing live for his fans.

"His family requests privacy at this time. Well wishes and prayers are greatly appreciated."

Lewis has scaled back his live performances in recent years but continues to perform at festivals and occasional solo gigs.

His next scheduled concert was on May 18 in Tennessee.

The Louisiana-born star has topped the American charts 12 times and is known for other hits such as Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On and High School Confidential.
