AN urgent evacuation of a town was sparked after a man broke into a police station and attacked a cop before being tasered.

Emergency teams then cordoned off Oldham town centre while they searched a "suspicious" car – with people ordered to avoid the area.

The man broke into the grounds of Oldham Police Station in Greater Manchester shortly before 10pm on Tuesday as nearby buildings were evacuated.

The suspected has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, assault of a police officer and being found on enclosed premises.

A number of roads remain closed as specialist teams examine a "suspicious" car.

Greater Manchester Police say the vehicle is believed to have belonged to the man.

A spokesman told Manchester Evening News: "Just before 10pm tonight (January 4), a male gained entry to the grounds of Oldham Police Station.
