Tsunami alert after huge 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocks island off RussiaDecember 20, 2018
A tsunami is feared after a massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake has rocked a Russian island.
The tremor in Nikolskoye on Bering Island, around around 85km (52 miles) east of mainland Russia at the local time of 2am.
It occurred at a depth of around 33km (20 miles).
The tsunami warning is now in effect for all of the Pacific Rim and west coast of Canada, US and Mexico.
Tsunami Warning Centre has said waves are possible in a 300km (186 miles) radius.
The government has said the quake has caused some small landslides.
But no fatalities have yet been reported.
Vladimir Putin has yet to comment.
The tremor was initially measured at 7.8 magnitude but this has since been scaled down to 7.4 magnitude.
Nikolskoye is a rural fishing and farming town.
It is extremely rich in wildlife and people online have expressed concern for the habitats in and around the town.
