Stephen Lawrence’s mother blasts ministers for failing to tackle knife crime because they think 'black lives are cheap'February 12, 2019
Doreen Lawrence compared the bloody epidemic sweeping the UK to “ethnic cleansing”.
She said Governments would not have tolerated the alarming rise in deaths if it was affecting “white kids” as much.
Baroness Lawrence told The House magazine: “If this was a group of white kids that were being killed on a daily basis up and down the country, the Home Secretary would want to do something about it.
“The parents would – everybody [would] be up in arms. Society will not sit back and allow this to carry on.
“And this has been going on since 1999. Twenty years on, so many kids, and even so the numbers are increasing.
“And what are they doing? It’s only now you begin to hear they’re looking to try to address this, but that could have been done a long time ago and nip it in the bud.”
She added: “Come on. It’s a black kid. Nobody cares. Black lives are cheap. You know, who cares about one more black person?
Her comments come after shocking figures showed that fatal stabbings have hit a 70-year high.
The number of homicides by a knife or sharp instrument leapt by 73 to 285 in the year to March 2018.
While in London alone 134 people were knifed to death – the capital’s bloodiest year in a decade.
Stephen Lawrence, 18, was stabbed to death in an unprovoked racist attack in Etham, South East London, 26 years ago.
Baroness Lawrence said “not much has changed” since her son’s murder.
She said: “That’s the view a lot of people have, the families that’s going through all of this. You know, the stuff I’ve had to go through in the past, how many years trying for society and the justice system to take notice?
“This is what’s happening to our kids. It’s like ethnic cleansing, right?”
The bungled police inquiry into Stephen’s murder sparked a national outcry and prompted the Macpherson report, which found the Met Police institutionally racist.
Speaking to mark the report’s 20th anniversary, Baroness Lawrence blasted ministers for their inaction.
