Primark shoppers caught a man taking upskirt photos of a woman in a crowded store and stopped him from escaping before the police arrived.

The 20-year-old woman was waiting in a queue at the Princes Quay shop with her younger sister to pay when she felt something brush against her thigh on March 8, 2020, Hull Magistrates’ Court heard.

Kevin Syder, 55, was caught taking the pictures by other shoppers who raised the alarm.

Syder, of South Bridge Road, Hull, tried to flee the scene, but was stopped by security.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested Syder and seized his mobile phone.

Prosecutor Colette Dixon said: ‘The complainant is a 20-year-old female, she was shopping with her 16-year-old sister at the time.

‘While she was in the queue, she felt something brush against the back of her upper right thigh.

‘At the time she didn’t think anything of it because there were a large amount of items close by and the area was crowded.

‘She says that the store was busy as it was around lunchtime and she was just in the queue chatting with her sister waiting to pay.

‘Another shopper saw a man using a phone under her skirt and alerted her to it and she turned around to face the man accused.

‘She felt herself freeze, she was extremely upset and has struggled to recall what happened after that moment.’

The court heard that the woman became extremely agitated and called for help from other shoppers who began coming to her aid.

It was at this point that Syder attempted to flee the scene but was prevented from doing so by a number of shoppers before he was detained by security services.

When interviewed by police officers, Syder declined to comment.

Syder’s victim spoke of the trauma that the incident had caused and her anger at not being able to feel safe when out on a shopping trip.

Mrs Dixon said: ‘She says she was extremely upset throughout the whole episode and now feels violated.

‘She said she was wearing a skirt and tights and should be able to wear anything that she likes when going out without the fear of someone taking private images of her without her consent.

‘She has felt extremely low since the incident and carries it with her whenever she goes out, she especially worries for her younger sister who she says it has had an extreme effect on due to their closeness.

‘She said I want the police and the court to take positive action, I should be able to go shopping without the fear of this sort of crime occurring.’

The court heard that Syder was a man of previously good character with no previous convictions to his name.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of recording an image beneath the clothing of another person with the intention he would look at the image for the purposes of obtaining sexual gratification.

Syder will be sentenced at Hull Crown Court on January 12.

He was released on unconditional bail.
