A WOMAN feared she may lose her leg after she was left trapped under a sports car which ploughed into her as she walked to work, a court has heard.

Faruk Miah, 34, ploughed into Monica Nunes in his convertible BMW after hitting another car and slamming into railings in Commercial Road, Whitechapel, east London.

Ms Nunes, who was making her way to work, was initially told she might lose her leg after her tibia was fractured in several places, Thames Magistrates' Court heard.

Footage showing the scene of the horrific crash was circulated on WhatsApp and went viral.

Miah is accused of dangerous driving and refusing to give a sample of urine for a class A drug test at The Royal London Hospital following the incident on June 21 last year.

Kirsten Marenah, prosecuting, said: "The allegation is that the defendant's car struck the near side of another car, which was coming across Commercial Road.

"The defendant's car, being a BMW convertible, then shunted another car along the road.

"The car veered left and hit some railings outside a residential property, colliding with Ms Nunes.

"She became stuck under the BMW and suffered injuries. Her tibia was fractured in several places.

"The initial assessment was of the view that she might lose the leg, however that has not occurred. She has had a metal plate inserted in the leg.

"She remained in hospital for two weeks. Physiotherapy will be required.

"People in the other car had superficial injuries. The defendant suffered spinal injuries as a result of the collision."

Miah, from the Isle of Dogs, east London, denies causing serious injury by dangerous driving and refusing to provide a sample.

He will next appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on February 14.
