Frightening footage shows moment 47 vehicles collide on a Kansas highway, killing one and injuring several others

  • Shocking footage has emerged of a major pile-up on a highway in Kansas

  • It happened near the Oak Grove interchange and Westbound lanes of I-70

Shocking footage has emerged of a major pile-up on a highway in Kansas which killed one and injured several others.

The crash happened near the Oak Grove interchange and Westbound lanes of I-70 just east of Kansas city and involved 47 vehicles on Friday.  

One person died and several others were injured and taken to hospital when the crash occurred as the city was was gripped by a winter storm, with heavy snow covering much roads.

More than 40 vehicles were involved in the crash, including several trailers and trucks.

The westbound lanes of I-70 were shut down for several hours as crews responded to the crash and worked to clear the highway.

Jamon Weaver, a truck driver, recorded frightening footage of the incident.

He and his girlfriend were driving from Kentucky to Las Vegas when they were caught in the pileup.

He can be heard saying: ‘Oh my lord, there’s nothing we can do. It’s best for you to stay in the truck. Somebody dead. We safe.’

He told KSNT he was lucky to be inside the big truck which protected him and his girlfriend.

Weaver said: ‘ I heard boom, boom, boom, I’m just screaming like, ah lord, everybody dead.’

‘I’ve never been in an event or a circumstance like this in my life,’ he added.

He said he hopped out of the truck to help those injured and to offer assistance. His truck was hit but he escaped injury.

Emergency responders assist motorists who were caught up in the collision on Friday 

Missouri State Highway Patrol had responded to at least 300 service calls, over 140 slide-offs and 65 crashes, as of Friday evening

The crash was just one of several accidents reported across the region on Friday afternoon.
