The family of singer, actor and cancer campaigner Olivia Newton-John plans to accept the offer of a state funeral.

Newton-John’s niece, Tottie Goldsmith, told A Current Affair on Tuesday night they wanted to accept the offer.

“We will,” Goldsmith told the program when asked about a state funeral.

“On behalf of not just our family but I think Australia needs it, she’s so loved.

“I think our country needs it, so we’re going to accept it.“

Landmarks across the state were lit up in pink on Tuesday night to commemorate the life of the star entertainer whose death in California was announced by her husband early on Tuesday.

The state government would not confirm details after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said earlier on Tuesday that they planned to discuss the prospect of a state funeral with the entertainer’s family.

“As for celebrating her life and her music and film and all the other amazing contributions that she made, we would, of course, want to speak to the family and be as respectful as we can,” the Premier said.

Andrews said the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at Heidelberg showed the esteem in which Victorians held Newton-John, not just for her work in music and film.

“[She was] an absolutely supreme talent; a person of such grace, a person of such energy, such vitality,” Andrews said.
