A TOP prosecutor has been shot dead in front of his pregnant wife on their honeymoon by a cartel hitman on a jet ski.

Marcelo Pecci, 45, was gunned down on a beach in Isla Barú outside the Caribbean city of Cartagena, Columbia, on Tuesday.

He and his wife, Claudia Aguilera, had announced she was expecting their first child in an Instagram post on Monday.

Police are treating the sickening murder as a targeted assassination and are hunting two hitmen.

Heart-wrenching footage has been published in South American papers showing Ms Aguilera bending over him on the sand and caressing his hair and forehead as he lay dead and only partially covered by towels on the sand.

The couple had married on April 30 and were enjoying their honeymoon.

Ms Aguilera says her husband's killer got off a jet ski to shoot him in the face and back without any warning.

She said: “The day began peacefully and we decided to go to the beach after breakfast, the view is spectacular and it’s our honeymoon.”

“Two men attacked Marcelo. They reached the beach on a small boat or jet ski I think, although the truth is I didn’t see it properly.

“One of the men got off it and without saying a word shot Marcelo twice.

“One of the shots hit him in the face and the other in the back.”

The killers fled using the same mode of transport they had used to reach the beach.

She said: “We were helped by other people who were on the beach but he was already dead.”

She told El Tiempo: “We hadn’t received any threats.

“Everything happened so quickly. All I remember clearly were the shots and Marcelo on the sand.

“The man went straight for Marcelo, he just looked at him and shot him, he didn’t say anything.”

She had been updating her social media with details and selfie photos of their sunshine destination.

Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office has issued a picture of one of the suspected killers.

It is believed they reached the beach on a hired jet ski before shooting Mr Pecci dead yesterday on Tuesday morning.

Mr Pecci played a key role in the prosecution that led to former Barcelona and AC Milan star Ronaldinho having to pay a fine after a forced stay of nearly six months in Paraguay in 2020.

The murdered prosecutor specialised in tackling violent crime and had been involved in investigating a massive drugs and money laundering operation called A Ultranza Py against a criminal gang exporting Colombian-made cocaine to Europe.
