Paddy Ashdown's wife joins former PM John Major as ex-Lib Dem leader is laid to restJanuary 10, 2019
The politician and former Royal Marine, who led the party from 1988 to 1999, passed away in December after a brave cancer battle.
Mourners gathered for an intimate ceremony at St Mary's Church, Somerset, which was broadcast via videolink to the nearby village hall.
Speaking after Ashdown's death on December 22nd, ex-PM Major described him as "a man of duty, passion, and devotion to the country he loved – right up to the very end" in an emotional tribute.
He said: "In Government, Paddy Ashdown was my opponent. In life, he was a much-valued friend.
"His loss will be felt deeply by many – and not least by myself."
Current PM Theresa May added: "It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of Lord Ashdown.
"He dedicated his life to public service and he will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
Sir Vince Cable, the party's current leader, said it was "a hugely sad day" for the party and everyone else across politics "who had immense affection and respect for Paddy".
He added: "Few people know how hard he fought to get into politics following his service in the marines and diplomatic service,"
A spokesman for Yeovil Liberal Democrats said: "There will be additional memorial events taking place at a later date within the constituency, and likely a service in London."
