LAPD sent cops to patrol homes of creators of bisexual Superman comic

Production staff who worked on Superman comic depicting the superhero as bisexual received DEATH THREATS and were provided police protection at their LA studio and homes

The creators of the controversial Superman comic that has The Man of Steel coming out as bisexual have been given police protection after receiving death threats from irate fans, law enforcement sources have revealed.

According to TMZ, Los Angeles Police Department officers were dispatched to the private residences of illustrators and production staffers tasked with producing the contentious comic, titled Superman: Son of Kal-El, to protect them after they received several threats from fans peeved over the latest Superman iteration’s sexual orientation. 

What’s more, officers were also deployed to the studio itself, in Los Angeles, to protect staffers from potential attacks, the outlet reported Tuesday morning.

The latest iteration of Superman, who has already appeared in the ongoing comic book series Superman: Son of Kal-El, is slated to come out as bisexual and begin dating his male best friend in the fifth issue of the serial slated for release on November 16

The revelation comes mere weeks after comic-book giant DC confirmed that their poster-boy protagonist would reveal himself as bisexual in an issue slated to release on November 16, sparking intense backlash from fans across the globe.

Amid the outpour of criticism, the comic’s writer, Tom Taylor, defended the choice to write the character as a member of the LGBTQ community, arguing the beloved hero’s sexuality is but a small detail – one that will allow LGBTQ people ‘to see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.’ 

But not everyone shares the same welcoming sentiment. 

Earlier this month, Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo angrily asked why DC Comics was allowing staffers to sexualize superheroes on Laura Ingraham’s late-night program The Ingraham Angle.

‘Why are they sexualizing superheroes?’ the conservative journalist asked Ingraham. 

‘Call me when they have a gender-stable aisle with superheroes whose sexualities we know nothing about. 

‘I was a Batman and Superman and Spider-Man kid. I loved those heroes. We just wanted them to get the bad guys, not a venereal disease. Leave our comic book heroes alone.’  

Former Superman actor Dean Cain, 55 who portrayed the superhero for four seasons on the 1993 TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, also spoke out on the controversy, suggesting to Fox News that the staffers producing the comic were ‘bandwagoning.’

‘They said it’s a bold new direction. I say they’re bandwagoning,’ the former Man of Steel said in a televised interview earlier this month.

‘I don’t think it’s bold or brave or some crazy new direction,’ the actor continued.

‘If they had done this 20 years ago, perhaps that would be bold or brave. But brave would be having him fight for the rights of gay people in Iran where they’ll throw you off a building for the offence of being gay.’ 

Cain added that he would prefer to see Superman fighting the ‘real evil in the world today,’ like ‘corruption and government overreach.’

A host of readers also took to social media to voice their concerns – and in some cases, disgust – over the comic book publisher’s announcement, which came on October 11, National Coming Out Day.

‘Congratulations,’ one user wrote on Twitter in response to a tweet from Taylor detailing DC’s announcement. ‘You just wrecked one of the oldest comic heroes.’

‘This won’t translate to sale,’ another user wrote, labeling the change as ‘fake.’ The cross fan also suggested that the team behind the comic ‘only do this for headlines.’ 

Another griped: ‘Way to ruin a character, let’s just do whatever it takes to please the 0.01% of the population.’

Meanwhile, one commentator who supported the studio’s move to amend the iconic character’s sexuality, seemed to eerily forecast the team’s current situation, regarding the ongoing, alleged threats to their safety.

‘I applaud this in EVERY way,’ the user wrote in response to Taylor’s tweet on October 11, but eerily added: ‘I just hope you’re prepared for the backlash from parents and conservatives all over the map.’

Now, with two week left before the November 16 release of the comic’s fateful fifth issue in which Clark Kent’s successor announces himself as bisexual and kisses another man, the real-world consequences alluded to by the Twitter user have come to life, with Los Angeles police stepping in to ensure that the situation does not escalate.

According to TMZ, sources close to or within the Los Angeles Police Department revealed to the outlet that the team producing Superman: Son of Kal-El received an array of angry calls from fans vexed over the hero’s newly announced sexuality – with some of them containing threats of actual violence to staffers.

Concerned for their safety, staffers from the Los Angeles studios working on the comic book then proceeded to call the police department to report the threats, who responded by sending patrol cars to surveil the studios and several employees’ private residences, the news outlet reported Tuesday.

Sources close to or within the Los Angeles Police Department revealed to the outlet that the team producing Superman: Son of Kal-El received an array of angry calls from fans vexed over the hero’s newly announced sexuality – with some of them containing threats of actual violence to staffers

So far nothing has come from the reported threats, the outlet further revealed, but the source added that even after the situation somewhat ‘settled down’ in recent weeks, cops still patrolled the aforementioned areas out of an abundance of caution. 

The Los Angeles Police Department has yet to address DailyMail.com’s request for comment regarding the details of the case.
