Kellyanne Conway calls Jim Acosta ‘smart ass’ in heated exchangeJanuary 9, 2019
President Trump’s counselor Kellyanne Conway got into a verbal smackdown with White House nemesis Jim Acosta of CNN — calling him a “smart ass” when he asked her if Trump would be honest in Tuesday’s Oval Office speech on border security.
“Can you promise that the president will tell the truth tonight? Will he tell the truth?” Acosta asked as Conway spoke with reporters about the speech outside the White House.
“Yes Jim and can you promise that you will?” Conway replied.
“I will. Absolutely,” answered Acosta, whose White House press credentials were briefly yanked by the president after he had a confrontation with Trump during a briefing.
CNN sued and the credentials were returned.
“The whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God. Am I allowed to mention God to you?” Conway needled Acosta, whom the administration has accused of grandstanding during press briefings, prompting another dig from the CNN correspondent.
“I’m not the one that has the alternative facts problem like you do. Will the president tell the truth?” he said, referring to Conway’s infamous description of former spokesman Sean Spicer’s false claim that attendance at Trump’s inauguration was the highest in history as “alternative facts.”
“Make sure that goes viral,” Conway taunted as the spat — playing out in front of multiple TV cameras — grew even more heated.
“Okay,” Acosta retorted, as Conway got personal, essentially saying that no one liked Acosta.
“This is why I’m one of the only people around here who gives you the time of day,” she snapped.
But Acosta wouldn’t relent.
“Can you guarantee that the president’s speech will pass a fact check?” he asked her.
“Let me get back in your face because you’re such a smart ass most of the time and I know you want this to go viral, a lot of these people don’t like you. But just let me be respectful to the media at large as I always am, I explained that was alternative information and additional facts and I explained it many times,” she railed.
“And don’t you put it back in my face for all the corrections that your network needs to issue. I was on your network 25 or 26 times in 2018 and I’m one of the last people here that even bothers to go on. And the disrespect that you show to me personally,” she continued until Acosta interrupted her.
“Ma’am I just asked you if the president will tell the truth tonight,” he said again.
“Don’t call me ma’am just to make it up,” she shot back.
Conway also said that spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders made an “unfortunate statement” on Fox News Sunday when she suggested that 4,000 terrorists had been stopped at the southern border when the actual number was 12 between October 2017 and a year later, and that many of those were US citizens.
