Greggs admits vegan sausage rolls hit by supply chain shortage sparking outcry from veggiesNovember 18, 2021
GREGGS has admitted that their vegan sausage rolls have been hit by a supply chain shortage sparking an outcry from veggies across the country.
The bakery chain said there were "temporary interruptions" to supplies of products – including its popular light puff pastry with vegan meat filling.
Greggs launched its vegan sausage roll in 2019 – and it quickly rose in popularity as an alternative to the much-loved meat version.
But now punters will be lucky to get their hands on the stuffed seasoned Quorn filling as there are interruptions to the supply chain.
A spokesperson for Greggs said: "Like others, we're seeing temporary interruptions which are affecting the supply for some of our products.
"Our stock levels will vary from day to day but we are working hard to minimise any impact on the availability of our products."
They added that the Newcastle-based firm was working hard to minimise the disruption and did offer a broad range of alternative snacks.
The shortage follows panic buying at Britain's fuel pumps, soaring heating prices and limited supplies of crisps.
Similar supply chain issues have recently hit other food chains including McDonald's and Pizza Express.
One devastated pastry lover said: "Really want a Greggs vegan sausage roll but the Greggs closest to me didn't have any left yesterday and it was the final straw that made me have a meltdown, and I'm so scared of being let down again."
And another person took to Twitter and said: "Devastated. Greggs had no vegan sausage rolls today. I think this is grounds for going back to bed."
Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside warned last month that the firm had not been immune to Britain's staffing and supply chains due to the impact of the pandemic and Brexit.
He had seen some disruption to the availability of labour and supply of ingredients and products, it was reported.
Mr Whiteside said that he wakes up every morning asking what new item had disappeared, but he pledged to not run out of sausage rolls.
Despite the disruption, Greggs has recovered well after its business model was hammered by the pandemic – and its shares are up over 70 per cent this year.
