Incredible footage shows the dramatic rescue of a little girl after she fell into a panda enclosure at a zoo.

The incident happened at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China’s Sichuan province, according to local media.

A video shows how a security guard desperately tried to reach the girl, believed to be five, before eventually pulling her up just as a panda approached her.

The child, whose name is not known, was dressed in a red coat and fell around 6.5 feet into the enclosure as crowds gathered to take a look at the exotic creatures.

She fell through a gap and ended up in a trench around the side of the animals’ enclosure.

The pandas looked curiously at the new arrival but didn’t make any attempts to attack or hurt the girl.

Onlookers watched in horror as the guard reached through a gap to haul the child back up to safety.

He initially tried to reach her with a pole, but his attempts were unsuccessful.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV claims the girl had been sitting on a fence when she fell backwards into the enclosure.

The incident is under investigation but the youngster was fortunately not harmed in the incident.

Afterwards, a warning was issued on Weibo, warning visitors not to move past the safety markings.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, or simply Chengdu Panda Base, is a non-profit research and breeding facility for giant pandas and other rare animals.

It was founded in 1987 and aims to increase the population of pandas and eventually release some of them back into the wild.
