HEART-breaking images of skeletal bears begging for food from tourists have sparked online petitions to save them from more misery.

Footage shows visitors to Bandung zoo, on the Indonesian island of Java, hurling cake, sweets and snacks at the bears in a desperate attempt to feed them.

Now online petitions have  been set up to is to shame the local mayor into closing the failing zoo for good.

Wildlife trade monitoring group Scorpion sent an investigator to capture the sickening footage of the animals, who were a fraction of their healthy 80kg weight.

Gunung Gea, the director of Scorpion, told Daily Mail Australia: "When my team visited the zoo last week there was no grass or live trees on the floor of their cage.

"We saw a sun bear eating its own dung but when we contacted the zoo's officers they told us the bear was medicated and we weren't allowed to see it."

Animal activist Tori Hollingsworth was so outraged by the video she decided to launch a petition demanding the zoo be shut.

It has so far been sign by more than 12,000 concerned people. Other petitions have attracted many more signatures.

Tori said: "The bears are extremely thin and very hungry. Appalled visitors give them junk food to try and keep them alive.

"The video shows how the sun bears immediately go after small pieces of food that are tossed in their direction. They stand on their two feet and beg for more in a truly heartbreaking moment.

"These beautiful creatures should not be allowed to spend one more day at this terrible facility where they are forced to live between concrete walls, with no proper shelter and absolutely no food and water.

"It is obvious that this zoo is not helping the animals. It is nothing short of a prison."

It's not the first time the zoo has been rocked by animal cruelty claims.

A 'starving' giraffe died there and was found to have 40lbs of plastic in its stomach.

The animals are said to rely heavily on food donations to survive with no on-site vet.

The carnivores reportedly only get fed when New Zealand sends over food parcels.

Bandung zoo staff refused to comment when contacted by the press.
