A TEENAGE girl left pregnant after being raped was strangled to death and decapitated by her father in India, it has been reported.

The 16-year-old is thought to have been killed on September 23 in a village near Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh after her father was taunted by neighbours for being pregnant.

Police believe the girl was beaten and strangled before her dead body was decapitated and buried in a riverbed.

Cops recovered the body yesterday and a case was opened as no complaints had been lodged when the girl went missing.

The girl's father admitted to the crime and was arrested by police.

The 16-year-old, who stayed with a relative away from her parents' home, had been raped and fallen pregnant several months ago, police told the Times of India.

"The father has confessed to having killed his daughter because she was pregnant. People had started insulting him publicly," said senior superintendent of police S Anand.

The girl wasn't sent to school and reportedly hid her pregnancy until the baby bump started showing, according to reports.

Police say that the girl's family beat her and demanded that she revealed the name of her alleged attacker. She refused before she was killed and her body mutilated.

Cops are trying to track down the girl's alleged rapist.

Nearly 34,000 rapes are reported in India each year. The country's rape crisis has been under the spotlight since the 2012 gang rape of a 23-year-old student.

The attack, which saw the student raped and beaten by a gang of six twisted men, prompted thousands demanding stricter laws. Prison sentences were doubled to 20 years and voyeurism, stalking and trafficking of women was criminalised.

MPs also voted to lower the age at which a person can be tried as an adult for heinous crimes to 16 from 18.

The death of a six-year-old girl sparked furious protests in Uttar Pradesh after she was allegedly raped by her cousin.

The girl was being treated in a Delhi hospital but the youngster died of her injuries yesterday.

Her family placed the alleged victim's body on a road in India's Sabadad region and demanded the arrest of negligent police officers, according to local media.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of the rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman.

The woman's family say her legs and ribs were broken as she was tortured during the attack, although officials did not confirm the injuries.

The 22-year-old, who reports claim to be part of the lower-caste Dalit community, had been working at a private firm but didn't return home.

The injured woman was brought home on a rickshaw last Wednesday but she died on the way to the hospital.

Human rights organisations in India claims that Dalit women are particularly vulnerable to caste-based discrimination and violence.
