COUCH potatoes can reverse the harm caused by years of sitting by exercising in middle age, a study reveals.

A strict exercise regime for two years in tests improved their oxygen uptake by a fifth and had less “stiff” hearts.

Sedentary lifestyles increase the risk of the heart muscle shrinking and stiffening.

Researchers analysed the tickers of 53 adults aged 45 to 64 who were healthy but sedentary.

Some did two years of high and moderate- intensity exercise such as circuit training, running or swimming.

Others were in a control group, doing yoga, balance and weight training. The intense set had less cardiac stiffness and increased energy.

There was no improvement in the control group, the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine in Texas found.

Study leader Dr Benjamin Levine said: “The optimal dose of the right kind of exercise is four-to-five times a week.

Julie Ward, of the British Heart Foundation, said: “Moderate exercise helps.”
