Columbia student who went on racist tirade: I’m not racistDecember 12, 2018
The Columbia University student who was caught on video unleashing a racist tirade said on Tuesday that he is “not a white supremacist.”
Julian von Abele, who shouted racially-charged remarks at fellow students on Sunday, told The Daily Beast that the angry rant was part of a “broader debate” about white privilege.
“I am not a white supremacist or racist, nor do I subscribe to any views that support that ideology. I unequivocally denounce all groups that support racism,” von Abele said in a statement to the website.
“My reaction that evening grew out of my distaste for the overuse of the term ‘white privilege’ and similar divisive rhetoric as a means of dismissing views of others.”
During the video — filmed outside the Butler Library about 4 a.m. Sunday — the sophomore can be seen yelling that “white people are the best thing that happened to the world.”
“We invented science and industry and you want to tell us to stop because, ‘Oh my God, we’re so bad!’” he is heard shouting.
The school said they are investigating the “racially-charged incident.”
