Burglar Ivan Dyer, 37, spent 20 seconds trying to hide the drugs brought to HMP Swaleside, Kent, by Keren Modi, Maidstone crown court heard.

Prosecutor Paul Valder said: "She is seen to pass across a package and Mr Dyer then takes some time, in evident discomfort, to secrete the package himself.

"He is then intercepted by officers, searched and the package is found and it contained 39.69g of a mixture of herbal cannabis and what's thought to be tobacco."

The judge said: "It's not the cleverest exchange."

He added: "The taking of drugs into prison is a menace because not only the effects of the drugs but also because of all the violence that goes on around the trading of drugs in prison."

Modi, 20, of Croydon, South London, got an 18- week suspended sentence in a young offenders institute and 120 hours of unpaid work.

Dyer’s fate was not mentioned.
