Boy, 14, dies suddenly after tragic incident at school as emergency crews race to scene | The Sun

A TEENAGER has suddenly died following an incident at a Scots school.

Emergency services raced to St Kentigern's Academy near Bathgate, in West Lothian, at lunchtime yesterday.

Officers also scrambled to the area after the alarm was raised between 12pm and 1pm.

The incident took place within the grounds of the school, it has been confirmed.

Medics worked to save the young lad and he was rushed to hospital.

However, he tragically died a short time later.

Officers have launched an investigation into the incident to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragic death.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.20pm on Tuesday, 6 June, 2023, officers were called to a report of concern for a 14-year-old boy at a school in the Bathgate area.

“He was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment but died a short time later.

"His family have been informed and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the death.”

The school was formerly attended by Scottish singing superstar Lewis Capaldi.

Andrew Sharkey, Headteacher of St Kentigern’s Academy, said the school has been left "devasted" by the death.

He added that support is now being offered to pupils in the school and staff are supporting police with their investigation.

He said: “Everyone in our school community has been devastated to learn of the tragic death of one of our pupils. 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends and we extend our deepest condolences and offers of support.

"We have set up ongoing emotional support and signposting for students and staff affected by this tragic news.

"We would like to respect the family’s privacy at this incredibly painful time.

“We are assisting the relevant authorities with their investigation to establish the facts and we will not be making any further comment at this time.”

A statement from the school also read: "We can confirm that emergency services were called to St Kentigern's Academy earlier today following an isolated incident within the school grounds.

"All parents of pupils directly affected have been contacted and we are assisting the relevant authorities with their ongoing enquiries.

"We have set up emotional support and signposting for students affected by today's incident and are unable to comment further at this time due to an ongoing police investigation".

Locals told of their shock on social media after hearing the tragic news.

One person said: "Absolutely heartbreaking. You don't expect to send your child to school and not have him return home."

Another added: "Sending love and strength to this wee boys family. I cannot begin to imagine broken they must feel!"

Someone else posted: "How heartbreaking. I can't even think of any words. So tragic."

While a fourth wrote: "Absolutely devastating, my thoughts go out to this young boys family. Can’t imagine the pain they must feel."

A local church has also taken to social media to ask the community to keep the young boy in their prayers.

St John the Baptist Parish Church Fauldhouse said: "Can you please keep the family and friends of the young S3 pupil who sadly passed away after an incident at St Kentigerns Academy in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you."

Blackburn Children’s Galaday committee also offered their condolences after hearing the sad news.

They wrote: "Blackburn Children’s Galaday committee are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of a young man at St Kentigern’s Academy yesterday.
