What did Boris Johnson set to announce?

Mr Johnson elaborated on the big news of the day – further relaxation of lockdown measures.

At lunchtime today (June 23 in the Commons), he announced that England will be easing many lockdown restrictions from July 4 with only a few more businesses waiting for the green light.

During the conference held at Downing Street, he expanded more upon the latest changes to the lockdown, which will come into play from July 4.

In a major update today, the PM announced:

  • He was slashing the 2m rule down to 1m plus
  • Staycations from July 4 got the green light as hotels and bed and breakfasts were told they could reopen
  • Pubs will also reopen from July 4 – but only one household can go inside with another and new measures will be in place
  • After three long months Brits will finally be able to get a haircut
  • But nail salons, gyms and nightclubs will remain closed for now
  • People will be allowed to see one other household inside – but they must still keep their distance
  • And sleepovers are finally allowed from July 4
  • Full list of all businesses allowed to reopen

Is this the last coronavirus daily briefing?

Yes. The Cabinet has been holding the near-daily briefings since March 16, for over 90 days.

From now on they will only happen when there is a significant announcement to make, the Government said.

Where can I find the data on deaths and cases in future?

We will still be updating the count daily because, as the PM said, the UK is not out of the woods yet.

Our blog runs from 8am to 1am too, and that will give you everything we know as it happens.

You can find UK figures – including the latest death toll and cases – on our website here.

Also, the government will be publishing the daily stats on the gov.uk site every weekday.

You can also find them on official global counters like Johns Hopkins University, which is a reliable one that most news outlets use to keep an eye on global trends.
