A GIRL of eight spent £200 to rescue more than 100 goldfish from a fairground.

Cherry Burton burst into tears when she saw the fish in plastic bags to be given away as prizes.

The animal lover said: “It isn’t fair, they have their own little lives, and shouldn’t be being sold as prizes.”

She and mum Kitty offered to buy them all from the stallholder, who wanted £270.

But he accepted £200 — £100 of Cherry’s pocket money, saved for a year, matched by Kitty.

And the youngster left with all of the fish in two candy floss tubs with holes in the lids.

Cherry and Kitty, 42, spotted the fish at a Hook-a-Duck stall at Hayfield May Queen Fair in Derbyshire.

Cherry, who wants to be a vet, said: “It ruined my day seeing them like that.

“They should be able to swim where they want, and shouldn’t be kept in little plastic bags.

“I want to find a good home for them all, but we also can put them in a big pond and look after them too.

“I just want to do whatever I can to help all the animals.”

She has now even set up a petition calling for a ban on giving pets as prizes in England and Wales.

Kitty, of Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbys, said: “She was in tears when she saw the little fishes in the bags, and we couldn’t just leave them.

“I can’t believe they’re still allowed at the fairground, It really shocked me.”
