HUGH Bonneville will forever be known for playing the lead character in the historical drama Downton Abbey.

But before landing this plum role, the critically acclaimed actor had starred on screen and performed on stage for years.

Who is Hugh Bonneville?

Hugh Bonneville was born in Blackheath, London on November 10, 1963.

He is best known for playing Lord Grantham in the ITV series Downton Abbey, and its spin-off movies.

Hugh kicked off his acting career when he graduated from Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

The actor joined the National Theatre in 1987 and appeared in several plays before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1991.

Hugh is happily married to his wife Lucinda "Lulu" Evans after they wed back in 1998.
