'The Good Place' Renewed For Season 4

Looks like the afterlife will go on just a bit longer for Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason. The Good Place has been renewed for season 4 at NBC. Yay! According to NBC, the episode count is “yet to be determined,” but the previous three seasons had 13-episode orders.

We’re happy one of the best TV shows of 2018 is coming back, but it looks like Kristen Bell is going to be one busy lady. She’s currently filming Hulu’s Veronica Mars revival.

In a statement from NBC’s co-presidents of scripted programming, Tracey Pakosta and Lisa Katz, the network praised the series:

“Congratulations to Mike Schur and an exceptional cast and crew, all of whom collaborate to create a thoughtful, mind-bending and hysterical series unlike anything else on television. We can’t wait to see what unexpected stories the new season will bring.”

The Good Place follows Bell’s Eleanor Shellstrop as she enters the afterlife and goes to “the good place,” where she’s mistaken for a much better person. As she struggles to fit in with the good people around her (including Jameela Jamil’s Tahani Al-Jamil) her misdeeds cause a spectacle and unveil a much darker plot.

Season 3 of The Good Place has transported the gang back to Earth and allowed them to live their previous lives as if they’d never passed. Could they be good people if they were allowed to try again? That’s the question! The group is faced with the philosophic dilemma of being better people when they really only want to be good to improve their afterlives.

In the most recent episode of Season 3, Eleanor, Tahani, Jason, and Chidi (who just figured out they were dead and stuck in an experiment), die yet again.

After the group is attacked by Sean and his demon friends, Janet pulls out some unprecedented moves and kicks all of their butts. However, Janet has to suck everyone into her void to escape the demons, effectively killing them and ending the experiment. Before the fight, Sean says something interesting to our heroes: Their families, friends, and even the person who has the most points on the moral scale won’t get into the good place. Does the good place even exist?

The Good Place Season 3 is currently tied with Superstore as the highest-rated NBC sitcom. As amazing as the series is, (there’s buzz the show will receive a few awards this season, what with Ted Danson’s Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy), there are some flaws in its design.

Our biggest problem with the show is how quickly it blows through material. Season 1 was nicely paced and the story built up well to the finale, but since then, it’s rushed through every story. For example, the series could’ve managed at least one more season of funny hijinks in the neighborhood, with Michael’s repeated failures. Instead, it lasted maybe two episodes before everyone was back in on the secret and another two before the neighborhood was destroyed.

Flash-forward to another twist, when the crew was given the chance to return to Earth and be good. However, as with Season 2, it was rushed, and everyone found out about their previous lives in five episodes. There’ve been many stories with the potential to span a full season that were unnecessarily condensed.

How long can Eleanor, Tahani, Chidi, and Jason escape the fact that they’re meant to be in the bad place? They’ve gone to Earth, another neighborhood, the medium place, and now Janet’s void, but there’s nowhere they can live out their eternal afterlives on the run from demons. It takes time to become a better person, so there will always be more to tell in that regard, but there’s nowhere else for the crew to escape. Maybe they’ll try to be better people while they’re stuck in the bad place?

As excited as we are for Season 4, we’re also worried. The show can’t be dragged out for too long, and eventually, there will be no more story to tell. Maybe Season 4 should be the series’s last season so its writers can take their time and give viewers a proper ending.
