Stranger Things season 4: Suzie confirmed as Russian spy as Dustin star drops clue?

December 30, 2019

Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson in the hit Netflix sci-fi series which pays homage to various 1980s classics and cult flicks, has spoken about the next chapter in Dustin’s life – and there’s a part of it he has called “so funny” if it were to happen.

At the end of the third series of Stranger Things the heroes were split in the aftermath of a shocking death.

Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour) was apparently killed in an explosion as he attempted to prevent catastrophe in Hawkins and to save the residents.

Deeply affected by his death, several key characters chose to move away from their hometown, unable to bear the pain of remaining where he died.

This decision, Gaten feels, will have a deep impact on fans when the show returns.

In an interview with Variety he admitted that he can’t predict what’s next, saying: “It’s really hard to say because I don’t really know where the characters are going. He’s flapping in the wind at this point.”

Gaten recalled the ending of the previous series and how that would shape the fourth season: “At the end of the season, all the kids are divided because everyone moves away from Hawkins. Eleven goes with Will and Joyce to go try and find some type of peace and the rest of the gang stays behind.”

Gaten believes fans will “freak” out by the separation of the characters: “I don’t necessarily know how that’s going to work. I mean Mike and El being separated is crazy. I think fans are going to freak out.”

While speaking about the fractured future for the teenage heroes, Gaten let slip one fan favourite theory he’s seen doing the rounds.

He spoke about how it relates to a character introduced in the third season: “My favourite theory is that Suzie’s actually a Russian mastermind and spy working with the Russian government.”

Suzie was the character Dustin met at summer science camp, and the pair became boyfriend and girlfriend much to the scepticism of his Hawkins friends.

Were this particular angle to be taken, Gaten thinks it could send the Upside-Down further upside-down.

“I think it’s so stupid and so funny. I hope that doesn’t play out because that would be weird.”

A teenage girl trained by the Soviet government and trained in the art of deep cover and surveillance? Literally, stranger things have happened in the show.

Currently production of the fourth series is due to start in January 2020, so you can expect speculation as to the fate of major characters to be sent into overdrive.

The key question many will want to know is if Hopper actually survived the blast at the end of the third series.

At the very end of the series, there is a mention of an “American” in a secret Soviet prison.
